About the Role

Reporting to the VP PS&D Portfolio Management, the Head of Kabanga JV will be accountable for managing BHP’s interest in the Kabanga Nickel Project.  The purpose of this role is to work with BHP’s subject matter experts and our joint venture partners to progress the Definitive Feasibility Study (DFS) towards an Execution decision.  Specifically, this role will oversee all of BHP’s technical, commercial and financial activities required to inform potential, future investment decisions.  Additionally, the Head of Kabanga JV will co-ordinate all internal communications and reporting regarding BHP’s interest in the Kabanga Project.

In this role you will be responsible for:

ESG & Social Value: 

  • Uphold BHP’s commitment to health, safety, security and compliance;
  • Ensure compliance with BHP’s governance processes including proactive engagement with BHP’s Global Functional teams and achievement of their requirements;
  • Drive adoption of world class standards in community relations, tailings management, water stewardship and closure planning, including improved biodiversity, restoration and regeneration outcomes.

Stakeholder Management: 

  • Manage key external party relationships including senior management of Lifezone, Kabanga Nickel & Tembo Nickel;
  • Proactively engage with BHP’s senior leaders across operational and functional areas;
  • Identify opportunities for the deployment of BHP expertise to assist our joint venture partners achieve safe & sustainable operations.

Study Management - Ensure BHP’s project study team:

  • Develops a deep understanding of all aspects of the Kabanga opportunity;
  • Supports the optimisation of the overall risk – reward profile of the opportunity;
  • Supports the delivery of the Definitive Feasibility Study (DFS) to both AusIMM and BHP project standards.

Government, Commercial & Legal: 

  • Co-ordinate the activities of BHP’s global functional experts to progress permitting, government engagements and third party negotiations.  

Operational Readiness: 

  • Manage the planning and execution of all BHP activities required for project execution and mining & processing operations.

As the Head of Kabanga JV, there is a preference for you to be based in Perth.  You will be required to travel regularly to Tanzania. 

About You

Your resource industry experience will reflect a diversity of experience across operational, commercial and financial roles.  You will have held a senior role in either project management or operations and can demonstrate an ability to lead large capital projects through to delivery.  With strong project management skills, you are methodical in your approach to understand project assumptions and are able to draw on your advanced decision-making skills to guide the project as it progresses.   Your interpersonal skills allow you to build and lead cross-functional teams to solve complex problems.  Your experience working in, or with, a range of mining companies (ranging from majors to mid-tiers) equips you with insights on how to achieve exceptional performance in an agile and nimble manner.

With clear and concise communication skills, you can articulate value creating options through to implementation and effectively engage internal & external stakeholders through your negotiation and influencing skills to achieve business goals.  You see engagement with stakeholders as a key part of your role and as an opportunity to learn new perspectives and build support for the project.  As an experienced and strategic people leader, you have demonstrated success in coaching and mentoring high performing teams to achieve outstanding business results.

Tertiary qualifications in a relevant discipline with further post-graduate study will be highly regarded.
