About the Role - Job Description

We are currently seeking to appoint a Head of Performance & Improvement – Western Australia Iron Ore (WAIO).  Reporting into the Vice President, Asset Performance & Improvement within the Technical Function, this leader is a member of the Asset Performance & Improvement Global Leadership Team and the WAIO Leadership Team.  The role leads a team of 5 improvement professionals.

The Head of Performance & Improvement WAIO will:

  • Support the development and update of the Asset Integrated Improvement Plan which identifies the key improvement priorities for WA Iron Ore
  • Lead and support delivery of high value improvement initiatives across Iron Ore
  • Support the development and delivery of improvement pipelines across Iron Ore to ensure targets are met
  • Facilitate replication of improvement practices and initiatives across sites

A global search, the role can be located in Perth, Western Australia or across the BHP Operations in the Pilbara (with some travel to site required).

About You - Skills & Qualifications

You will have experience leading and delivering high-impact, large scale improvement projects (+$50M EBITDA) in a mining or asset intensive context. You will be experienced at forming and leading multidisciplinary teams with the goal of achieving measurable and sustained value for our Assets. You will have demonstrated experience working within an innovative, best practice continuous improvement function.

You will bring a deep understanding of key business and mining industry performance drivers. A strategic and analytical thinker, you will be comfortable with ambiguity, demonstrate strong business acumen and be able to get to the root cause of problems. You will be highly effective at driving improvement outcomes through your strong technical ability, leadership and excellent communication skills.

You will be comfortable working in complex matrix work environments, and be able to navigate stakeholders in a global and dynamic organisation through your influencing, coaching and mentoring skills. An ability to constructively question ideas and build trusted relationships with a diverse range of stakeholders will be essential.

You will have proven experience as a leader of diverse, inclusive and highly performing teams. Energetic and results-orientated, you work well under pressure and are comfortable with ambiguity.

Requirements

Minimum requirements that this candidate will bring are:

  • Tertiary qualification in Operations, Engineering, Mining, Business Improvement, or related field required
  • Demonstrable experience in the delivery and realisation of large-scale and complex improvement/transformation projects
  • Experience in managing senior relationships, ideally within organisations/divisions of similar scale & complexity
  • Proven people leader, with a track record of building and leading a high performing culture, physically & psychologically safe, and diverse teams across numerous locations and disciplines to deliver performance outcomes
  • Continuous improvement and outcomes focused with an expertise in designing and implementing solutions leveraging analytical skills
  • Experience in the Resources/Mining or similar Asset-Intensive industry is essential

Accountabilities

Your core accountabilities will include:

  • Drive high value improvement through working in partnership with Asset leaders to identify, plan and deliver the highest impact operational improvement projects. To achieve this, the role will oversee the formation and management of multidisciplinary teams with Asset and Functional team members and in doing so will leverage the full capabilities of BHP’s Technical Group
  • Support the development and delivery of improvement initiative pipelines for the Asset so they are sufficient to achieve unit cost outcomes and other key metrics where improvement is required to meet or exceed Asset commitments. Part of this will be to facilitate replication of improvement practices and initiatives across BHP’s global operations
