Located on the tropical Groote Eylandt in the Northern Territory, GEMCO is an open-cut mine that is accountable for over 20% of the world’s manganese ore production. Groote Eylandt is home to the Anindilyakwa people, who are the traditional owners of the land and have been working alongside GEMCO since 1963.

ABOUT THE ROLE 

This role is a 14-month fixed-term contract position on a 4:3 roster, FIFO from Darwin or Cairns.

As the Health & Hygiene Superintendent, you will govern and continuously improve GEMCO’s Health & Hygiene sub-function to ensure the effective management of health and hygiene risks, fitness for work, workers compensation and injury management. Create and foster an inclusive workplace with a strong culture of care and accountability.

Other key responsibilities include, but aren’t limited to: 

• Offer expert technical advice and coaching to enhance site hygiene management. Collaborate with the global discipline team on complex issues and ensure the execution and assurance of critical controls.
• Design and execute hygiene monitoring programs ensuring they are fit for purpose and aligned with regulatory requirements and the operational risk profile.
• Implement improvement initiatives to streamline and leverage key opportunities.
• Develop and maintain collaborative relationships with GEMCO Leadership, Operational and Functional teams.

ABOUT YOU 

You will have experience and demonstrate capability in the following:

• Experience working in a similar role in an Operational environment (health, hygiene, workers compensation).
• Previous leadership experience.
• In-depth knowledge of hygiene management processes, technologies and relevant industry standards (e.g. OSHA).
• Proven skillset in developing and influencing operational practice within Health & Safety.
• Strong interpersonal, facilitation and influencing skills with the ability to present information in an engaging and effective manner.
• Experience and knowledge of change management principles, methodologies.

Qualifications for this position are: 

• Degree qualification in Safety, Hygiene, Allied Health or relevant field.
