Our Opportunity

Work Location: Fortescue’s Hedland Operations are located on the traditional lands of the Kariyarra people.

 

Roster: 8D/6R - FIFO ex Perth

 

This is a 12-month secondment opportunity. Reporting to the Superintendent Safety, the Safety Specialist plays a key role in partnering with operational leaders to drive a proactive safety culture across Hedland Operations. You will provide expert guidance, coaching and technical support to ensure Fortescue's HSE policies, standards and procedures are consistently applied and continuously improved. Through visible field leadership, infield verifications, mentoring, data analysis and stakeholder engagement, you will promote best practice safety outcomes, build capability across teams and support continuous improvement initiatives that enhance the safety and wellbeing of our workforce.

Key Responsibilities

  • Partner with operational leaders to provide specialist HSE advice and support the delivery of Fortescue's Health, Safety, Environment and Security (HSES) strategic objectives.
  • Coach, mentor and develop leaders and workgroups to build capability in safety leadership, compliance, assurance activities and proactive risk management.
  • Lead and support incident investigations, ensuring effective root cause analysis, corrective actions and continuous improvement outcomes.
  • Drive the implementation, monitoring and continuous improvement of HSES systems, governance frameworks and the Fortescue Major Hazard Program.
  • Analyse safety performance data, develop meaningful reporting and provide insights to support informed decision-making across Hedland Operations.
  • Build strong relationships with internal and external stakeholders, including contractors, consultants and regulatory bodies, while supporting contractor management audits and promoting a positive safety culture.

Qualifications and Experience

  • Tertiary qualification in Workplace Health & Safety or a related discipline, with demonstrated experience in a specialist HSE role within mining, heavy industry or a similar operational environment.
  • Strong knowledge of Australian WHS legislation, risk management principles, incident investigation methodologies and safety management systems.
  • Proven ability to influence, coach and mentor leaders and frontline teams to strengthen safety capability and drive continuous improvement.
  • Experience implementing safety initiatives, conducting assurance activities, audits and supporting major hazard management programs.
  • Strong analytical skills with experience interpreting safety data, developing reports and identifying trends to improve operational performance.
  • Excellent communication and stakeholder engagement skills, with the ability to build trusted relationships across all levels of the business and with external regulatory bodies.
