About the Role
Nickel West is one of the most sustainable nickel producers in the world and the world's leading nickel supplier to the battery metals market and part of our Minerals Australia business. Nickel West is a fully integrated mine-to-market business operating in various locations across Western Australia. All nickel operations (open-cut and underground mines, concentrators, a smelter and refinery) are located in Western Australia.
The Minerals Australia Heritage Team is responsible for delivering dual goals for the company, delivering social value in line with our Reconciliation Action Plan and unlocking resource value in line with our Life of Asset Plans.
At BHP we believe Traditional Owners have intrinsic rights to the land on which we operate. The role of the Heritage Team is to ensure that the company delivers land access in line with the expectations of Traditional Owners and in line with our Charter Values.
This role will be offered on a FIFO roster, based at our Mount Keith Minesite. Roster will be negotiated with the successful candidate.
Reporting to the Manager Cultural Heritage, your accountabilities include:
- Building strong relationships with the communities on whose Country we operate.
- Planning and supervising heritage field work to ensure the cultural and physical safety of all heritage survey participants.
- Proactively managing places of cultural heritage and conducing audits to confirm compliance across all of Nickel West’s operations.
- Contributing to initiatives that support our public commitments, Our Requirements, Indigenous Peoples Policy, and Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP).
About You
To be successful in the Heritage Liaison Officer role you will be driven by a personal desire to make a positive difference in the community combined with a clear understanding of the role that the resources sector plays in cultural heritage management.
You will also have the following skills and attributes:
- Proven experience working positively with Aboriginal people and communities.
- Commitment to safe work practices and the promotion of physical, mental, and cultural wellbeing in the workplace.
- Ability to lead teams in remote locations and tactfully resolve or escalate issues and concerns as they emerge.
- Foundational computer and written skills, preferably with incident reporting and logistical management experience.
- Knowledge of, or the desire to develop, GIS skills including the use of ArcGIS and handheld GPS devices.
- Current manual C Class Driver’s licence, with the ability to safely operate a 4WD.
- Prior cultural heritage management experience within Western Australia will be considered beneficial.
