About the role
Join Rio Tinto Bell Bay and take ownership of the high-voltage systems that power one of Tasmania's most significant industrial operations. This is an opportunity to apply your electrical expertise in a safety-focused, technically challenging role that directly supports the production of aluminium for customers around the world
As a Power Controller at Bell Bay Aluminium, you'll play a vital role in ensuring the safe operation of high-voltage assets that support continuous aluminium production, while contributing to a culture of safety, care and excellence.
Reporting to the Power Supply Crew Leader and working as part of a diverse group of team members your role may involve:
- Operate the high voltage assets to ensure a continuity of electrical supply to the smelter.
- Perform and participate in high voltage switching procedures.
- Ensuring uninterrupted electricity to the reduction process.
- Carrying out planned maintenance on power infrastructure.
- Working in both the control room and switchyard environment.
- Identifying root causes of breakdowns and implementing solutions to eliminate them.
- Liaising with external power providers.
What you will bring

- A ‘Can Do’ attitude with a strong focus on continuous improvement and delivering high standards of work.
- Australian Electrical trade qualification & License
- High voltage experience or exposure up to 220kV equipment
- Familiarity with Honeywell Experion Control Systems or similar system
- Relevant experience in an Aluminium Smelter and / or heavy industrial environment. Substation, transmission & distribution experience also considered and valued.

Where you’ll be working
Our Bell Bay Aluminium smelter began operating in 1955 and holds a unique place in Tasmanian and Australian history as the first aluminium smelter in the Southern Hemisphere. Based approximately 50 kilometres from Launceston in Northern Tasmania, the smelter produces primary aluminium products.
