About the role: 

We are seeking a skilled Data Scientist with a love of data and ethical product delivery, as well as curiosity about what makes people tick, to join the global People Data and Insights team.

This is an excellent opportunity for someone from a Data Science background to develop in the new area of AI Assurance while still being involved in traditional data science projects. We are also open to candidates from a non Data Science backgrounds with strong statistical skills and understanding or passion for AI Governance.

Reporting to the Manager Data Science & AI, you will have the opportunity to:

  • Select robust modelling and statistical approaches and experimentation strategies, strengthening practices in reproducibility, assurance, and observability to build trust in insights and product quality.

  • Use statistical and machine learning methods to identify key data features and engineer data pipelines from source systems to predictive models.

  • Contribute to the full lifecycle of data science products, from vision and discovery to delivery, adoption, and continuous improvement, ensuring solutions are user-centred and outcome-driven following a Product Mindset.

  • Communicate effectively with technical and non-technical stakeholders, driving alignment and informed decision-making.

  • Support the development, implementation, education and ongoing assurance of AI governance frameworks, policies, procedures and guidelines.

  • Embed safety, ethics, cyber security, and intellectual property considerations into the design, development, and deployment of ML/AI solutions.

  • Assess AI Deployments for risk across AI Assurance areas and implement and advise on controls.

About you

  • A strong commitment to the safety of yourself and your team

  • Tertiary qualifications in Mathematics, Statistics, Computer Science or other strong analytical fields, supported by a strong technical background and coding skills in Python, SQL and/or R.

  • Solid understanding of statistical concepts, machine learning and GenAI with expertise in navigating the process from problem definition to solution delivery.

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with attention to detail.

  • Curiosity and eagerness to learn new concepts and technologies.

  • Strong knowledge of LLMs. AI/ML systems, agent frameworks and AI Governance including observability, monitoring and evaluation

  • Data modelling and engineering experience, building and deploying models into production

  • Strong communication and relationship management skills, with the ability to work across multiple functions and translate between technical and non technical staff.

  • Sound judgement and an ethical approach to responsible AI use including balancing innovation and risk.

It will also be beneficial if you have:

  • Understanding of Human Resources or Social Sciences

  • Experience with cloud computing platforms and remote compute environments such as AWS and Azure (e.g. SageMaker, Databricks, AzureML).

  • Experience with Git code management (e.g. GitHub, Azure DevOps, Bitbucket, etc.) and agile delivery

Where you’ll be working 

The HR function supports 46 000 employees in around 36 countries and operates out of three business hubs in Brisbane, Perth and Montreal. Data science roles have diverse, multi-industry backgrounds and comprehensive skills in the fields of data modelling, engineering, and visualisation as well as advanced analytics techniques including machine learning and optimisation. These skills are used to turn data into information that can be used to make improved decisions that generate a competitive advantage for Rio Tinto. 

This role can be based in Brisbane or Perth (Australia)
