About the role

The Rio Tinto Commercial HSE team function is to provide professional support and advice on health, safety, environment, and security risks to ensure these risks are mitigated and managed as well as ensuring legal, internal, and external commitments aret fulfilled.

We are recruiting for a HSES Specialist to improve HSES outcomes within Rio Tinto Commercial by providing specialist support, advice and assurance to operational and functional leaders and teams within Commercial. Effectively identifying and managing HSES risks to achieve Commercial’s HSES performance objectives and targets.

Reporting to the Manager HSE (Commercial), you will be entrusted with the following exciting challenges!  

  • Support execution of Commercial HSES plans
  • Coach, support and influence Leaders on HSES systems including but not limited to – CRM System and verifications, Dangerous Goods requirements, management of incidents and injuries.
  • Carryout and support supplier HSES evaluations
  • Support and provide advice to Business units on Business Resilience
  • Provide support and advice in relations to the transportation of dangerous goods and hazardous products
  • Support assurance programs (first & 2nd party, business conformance and other as required)
  • Support standardisation; simplification, adopt and adapt best HSES practice
  • Assist the execution and implementation of Commercial Function HSES initiatives
  • Communication and engagement with Rio Tinto HSES groups and leaders
  • Support Leaders to identify and resolve HSES risks and management
  • Work closely with other HSES specialists to assist ongoing improvement and standardisation of risk and safety systems
  • Promote the reporting of accidents, incidents and unsafe situation and ensuring that they are investigated, and actions monitored
  • Conduct analysis on injury, incident, loss or damage reports and recommend appropriate action to ensure future liabilities are mitigated
  • Providing assurance across all areas of commercial by leading and participating in HSES diagnostics, inspections and audits
  • Assistance with the development and delivery of safety training
  • Maintain an up-to-date understanding of leading safety practices through further education, development courses and practical experience
  • Discuss safety issues/initiatives/solutions with all key stakeholders and lead by example
  • Assist with risk assessments through support and facilitation
  • Providing technical advice on root cause analysis and corrective action development in line with the hierarchy of controls
  • Share learnings within the organisation and with third parties
  • Manage issues as and when required

About you

To succeed in this role, you will have:

  • Tertiary qualified in health, safety, risk or human factors and/or ~ 5 years’ experience in similar HSE role
  • Experience in the Maritime, mining, transport or similar heavy industry
  • Previous work history with a major ship-owner in their marine risk management department
  • Knowledge and understanding of: HSES regulations, Risk management; risk assessment, reporting and assurance
  • Auditing experience
  • Experience working in a large global and complex multinational organisation
  • Self-starter who can work both independently and within a team to drive performance
  • Ability to translate business requirements into practical application in an operational environment
  • Demonstrate strong communication, problem solving and analysis skills through daily activities
  • Demonstrated ability to engage a broad range of stakeholders in various contexts

It will also be beneficial if you have:

  • Formal Auditor qualifications desirable, Training and assessing qualification desirable,
  • Essential Factors Incident Investigation training desirable
