Owned by Yancoal, Yarrabee is based in Blackwater QLD which is 200 km west of the Capricorn Coast. Yarrabee is a proud producer of high-quality PCI coal since 1982. We employ approximately 400 people, who are our most valuable asset and we invest in developing our management and leadership talent throughout our operations. Yancoal Australia is Australia’s largest pure play coal producer. It boasts three tier one thermal coal mines in New South Wales together with interests in three other metallurgical and thermal coal mines located in New South Wales and Queensland. Yancoal Australia also manages five other Australian coal mines on behalf of related parties. Yancoal currently employs over 3,000people across its operations.

We have a new opportunity for a HST Manager to join our team of industry-leading and experienced professionals to provide strong leadership and support a high-performance culture by role modelling and reinforcing the behaviours that will underpin the success of our operation.

About the Role

Reporting to the Operations Manager/SSE, the Health, Safety & Training Manager will be responsible for site compliance with relevant statutory requirements and will work closely with the Senior Management Team to implement Legislative and continuous improvement changes to Yarrabee systems.

This role is based in Central Queensland with flexible commute or residential options available.

In this role you will:

  • Support the operation in the development of a Health and Safety-focused culture through collaborative and effective communication
  • Develop and maintain safety and training management systems in response to legislative and operational change, industry leading practice and incident corrective actions
  • Provide leadership and coaching to the members of his/her team by applying the Yancoal Core Values
  • Provide advice on OHS statutory requirements and obligations
  • Facilitate and support investigations
  • Review high potential safety and training incident investigations for adequacy of corrective actions, timeliness of close out and apply findings to identify opportunities to improve safety and training management systems. 
  • Contribute to the development of a positive and collaborative organisational culture.
  • Actively contribute to, assist and share knowledge and information with your team aimed at improving safety, work processes, cost and teamwork.

About You

The successful candidate will have the following knowledge and experience;

  • Working knowledge of the Legislation, Australian Standards, Guidelines and Codes of Practice applicable to the Mining Industry
  • Working knowledge of the Workers Compensation & Rehabilitation Act and associated regulations
  • Thorough understanding of the competencies required to effect a successful mining operation in an open cut environment
  • In depth knowledge of the Resources Industry and Infrastructure training package and how to administer compliance with same on site
  • Sound understanding of the Australian Quality Training Framework and its implications upon the mining environment
  • Previous experience in the provision of safety advice within a Mining or heavy industry environment
  • Demonstrated experience in building relationships with regulatory bodies and senior personnel in relation to safety compliance and associated matters
  • Experienced in conducting training needs analysis and using information to create an effective and site specific training agenda

Skills and Qualifications

  • Minimum of 3-5 years' experience in a similar role within the mining industry.
  • Thorough knowledge of Coal Mining legislation and its application to the Safety and Health Management System (SHMS)
  • Extensive knowledge of Health and Safety Management systems, auditing and incident reporting and investigation (RIIWHS601- G7)
  • Experience in SAP, Intelex, SharePoint & Pegasus
  • Understanding of Risk Management principles holding the RIIRIS601 (G3) Risk Management qualification, or RIIRIS402 (G2)
  • Experience as Mine Site Safety Supervisor & hold Apply Risk Management Process - RIIRIS301E (previously S1,2,3)
  • Possess a strong commitment to behavioural safety and cultural change initiatives
  • ICAM investigator certified (Lead Investigator) & ICAM and/or TAPROOT incident investigation experience
