Yancoal Australia is Australia’s largest pure play coal producer. It boasts three tier one thermal coal mines in New South Wales together with interests in three other metallurgical and thermal coal mines located in New South Wales and Queensland. Yancoal Australia also manages five other Australian coal mines on behalf of related parties. Yancoal currently employs over 3,000 people across its operations.

An exciting opportunity has become available for a HST Superintendent to join our team of industry-leading and experienced professionals to provide strong leadership and support a high-performance culture by role modelling and reinforcing the behaviours that will underpin the success of our award winning operation.

About the Role

Reporting to the Operations Manager/SSE the HST Superintendent leads the team Health, Safety & Training professionals to maintain Safety and Health Management System (SHMS), the Risk Management System, Assurance & Compliance Systems and Emergency Capability system to ensure Yarrabee Coal Mine meets both legislative and Yancoal Australia requirements.

This position forms part of the senior leadership team on site and you will play a critical role in safety leadership and the coaching of leaders in site safety and risk management processes while promoting a positive safety culture within our operation.  

About You

  • Tertiary qualifications in a health and safety discipline - degree or diploma in OH&S
  • Current drivers’ licence
  • Experience working in the mining industry
  • Competent computer user with working knowledge of Microsoft Office suite
  • Ability to work with remote teams and varied stakeholders
  • Risk management including Critical risk implementation
  • Knowledge and application of current mental health strategies
  • Knowledge of the mining industry’s regulations and legislation relating to health and safety would be well regarded
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills and the ability to negotiate and liaise with site personnel
  • Good rapport building skills with site-based leaders and workforce

Skills and Experience

  • Working knowledge of the Legislation, Australian Standards, Guidelines and Codes of Practice applicable to the Mining Industry
  • Working knowledge of the Workers Compensation & Rehabilitation Act and associated regulations
  • Thorough understanding of the competencies required to effect a successful mining operation in an open cut environment.  In depth knowledge of the Resources Industry and Infrastructure training package and how to administer compliance with same on site
  • Sound understanding of the Australian Quality Training Framework and its implications upon the mining environment
  • Sound understanding of individual responsibilities in relation to the Coal Mining Safety & Health Act
  • Liaise with key stakeholders (engineers, mine site staff, government regulators) to ensure knowledge and compliance with legislation
  • Support management teams in incident investigation and root cause analysis as required (ICAM)
