About the Role

As a part of the BMA HSE team, you will be an instrumental player in supporting exposure reduction initiatives, as well as establishing and implementing aspects of the BHP Occupational Hygiene Plans and 1SAP work strategies on site. You will identify, assess, recommend controls and advise on occupational hygiene, health & safety matters in the workplace that potentially impact human health from environmental and work-related sources.

This position will be working across BMA operations in Queensland and reporting to the Superintendent Health & Hygiene. It will involve active site support and ideally residential in Moranbah or Mackay or Brisbane based with frequent travel to site. Flexile work options will be considered.

In this role you will:

  • Provide specialist advice to line management on key occupational hygiene impacts and regulatory requirements
  • Identify and assess occupational hygiene hazards including dust, diesel particulates, organic vapours, noise, gases, heat stress, asbestos, biological and radiation along with ongoing audits and verification activities
  • Oversee the occupational hygiene monitoring program as per the Hygiene Management Plan
  • Manage unexpected hygiene events including hazard assessment and recommendation of immediate corrective actions to prevent exposure
  • Ensure all contract partners are aware of occupational hygiene processes and requirements
  • Drive compliance and continuous improvement of BMA respiratory protection and hearing conservation programs through fit testing, in-field PPE verifications and compliance reporting
  • Manage Cority database to ensure quality of monitoring data and accurate reporting of results to stakeholders
  • Comply to and consistently follow the standards and procedures designed to enable you to work safely and effectively every day

About You

To be successful in the Hygiene Specialist role you will have a genuine desire to help people achieve positive health and wellbeing outcomes; combined with a clear understanding of the role that the resources sector plays in health, hygiene and wellbeing management of our most important asset – our people. 

You will have:

  • Degree qualification in Occupational Hygiene, Health Science, Physics, Chemistry, Engineering or similar.
  • High level of technical and practical skills or ability to acquire necessary skills in Occupational Hygiene
  • Strong understanding of Occupational Hygiene risks with previous experience in  mining would be  highly regarded
  • Previous experience with Cority (or Medgate) is desirable
  • Full AIOH Australian Institute of Occupational Hygienists (AIOH) membership is desirable
  • Proven commitment to look after your own wellbeing and the confidence to speak up when others put themselves in harm’s way.
  • The ability to develop and maintain mutually beneficial relationships with medical and allied health providers, and operational personnel with excellent communication skills.
  • A commitment to coaching, influencing, and encouraging a mentally healthy workforce.
  • Working knowledge of  the QLD mining health and safety legislation is required.
