Located on the tropical Groote Eylandt in the Northern Territory, GEMCO is a South32 Company, the operation is accountable for over 20% of the world’s manganese ore production. Groote Eylandt is home to the Anindilyakwa people, who are the traditional owners of the land and have been working alongside GEMCO since 1963.

About the role

In the role of Improvement Specialist, you will support the embedment of continuous improvement across the operation through the identification, development and execution of improvement initiatives along with building and developing Operational Improvement capability through coaching, mentoring and training of site personnel in improvement methodologies and techniques.
 
This role is being offered on a 4:3 Roster, FIFO Darwin/Cairns or Residential on Groote Eylandt on a full-time basis. 
 
As a member of the GEMCO Business Improvement team, your main responsibilities will include:
 

  • Support the Operation to identify Improvement opportunities by analysing Operational performance and impacts on business outcomes
  • Support the development of the Operations Improvement pipeline, including facilitation of idea generation, gap analysis, prioritisation and allocation of resources to ensure value delivery
  • Support the development and execution of Operational improvement plans through the application of relevant Business Improvement methodologies and techniques (including Agile, Lean, Six Sigma, Theory of Constraints, Value Chain Analysis etc)
  • Review, track, validate and measure the delivery of improvement initiatives
  • Partner with departmental stakeholders to remove Improvement Pipeline implementation obstacles
  • Provide support to the broader Business Improvement team to effectively manage standard business processes (Business Planning, Life of Operation Plan, Operating System)
  • As required, support the Operation to develop business cases for capital investments and improvement initiatives (including net present value and payback period calculations)
  • Design and implement effective and sustainable continuous improvement routines and processes
  • Review and maintain improvement systems and tools to enable effective execution of improvement initiatives

About you
 
You will be self-motivated and enthusiastic, have a passion for continuous improvement and commitment to be part of a high-performing team. You will have the ability to work autonomously and in a team environment, with demonstrated proficiency in delivering improvement in large organisations.

You’ll be a great fit if you have:

  • Strong Improvement experience in a Mining or heavy industry background
  • Ability to identify issues, gather and analyse data, engage stakeholders and develop conclusions
  • Strong Project delivery skills
  • Ability to build strong relationships across diverse Operational and Functional departments
  • Strong communication skills with the ability to communicate complex concepts in simple concise language
  • Formal training in Business Improvement methodologies and techniques such as Agile, Lean, Six Sigma, Theory of Constraints, Value Chain Analysis. (Desirable)
