About the role
BHP is excited to announce that we are offering Indigenous opportunities at our innovative and reputable FutureFit Academy to develop a maintenance career in mining. We are currently offering two program opportunities at the Perth FutureFit Academy – Apprenticeships and Maintenance Traineeships.
Apprenticeships are a 2 – 2 ½ year training program based at the academy. Apprentices study to complete a full trade qualification (Certificate III) in a number of different maintenance areas.
Maintenance Traineeships are a 12-month training program based at the academy. Trainees study to become highly skilled and valued Maintenance Associates with BHP, completing a Certificate II in Engineering – Production Technology and becoming familiar with maintaining specific mining equipment.
The Perth academy is currently offering training programs in:
- Fixed Plant Fitting
- Fabrication
- Heavy Diesel Fitting
The training involves a mixture of classroom and theory learning, as well as practical workshop training.
Training will be undertaken fulltime at our facility in Perth on an 8 days on / 4 days off roster. Candidates would need to relocate to the training location if they do not already live locally. As these will be town-based training locations, accommodation or daily transport to training will not be provided. Upon successful completion of a training program, you will commence site-based employment with access to accommodation facilities if you do not reside locally.
BHP has sites across Australia and it is important to understand that you may be required to relocate (including interstate) once you complete your training. This is based on demand for your trade or skillset across our mine sites. We will take your preference of training program into account, however applicants may be offered either a Traineeship or an Apprenticeship, depending on a number of factors throughout the application process.
About you
We’re looking for people from a broad range of backgrounds. Previous maintenance training is not necessary however you will have a genuine interest in fixing, repairing or tinkering. As these training programs contain fast-tracked learning, you will need to commit to attendance and have a personal situation and/or support network that will allow you to live local to the FutureFit Academy and work your training roster. To set you up for success, you will need:

- An interest in problem solving, fixing things and working with your hands
- A strong desire to learn and develop a range of new skills
- Motivation to achieve goals & enjoy a mixture of classroom and hands-on learning

- Ability to attend a roster that rotates across early mornings, evenings and weekends (8 on, 4 off)
- To have the necessary personal support networks available to assist you in working the above roster
