Learning and Development are accountable for the complete learning cycle including; identification of learning needs, design and development of learning content, scheduling for learning completion, delivery of learning, recording of learning completion and measurement of learning effectiveness against defined criteria.
Provision of the creation and review of contemporary, programmatic learning content across the Pacific Operations Business Unit and learn facilitates the successful transfer of knowledge to the learner through the most suitable method (including but not limited to virtual reality, eLearning, video learning, on the job training resources, presentations, written assessments or other).

As the Instructional Designer, you will scope, design, develop and review learning content in a planned and organized way that supports the business objectives. Creating learning content that facilitates the transfer of knowledge to the learner.
This is a fantastic opportunity to join our centrally located Learning Excellence team providing governance, assurance and process improvement across Rio Tinto’s Pacific Operations Learning and Development function.
Based in our newly renovated Brisbane Hub Midtown Offices on Charlotte Street and reporting to the Manager Learning Excellence in a challenging and exciting environment, you will:
- Partner with identified subject matter experts to design and develop quality learning content
- Create programmatic learning content that can cross location boundaries to effectively transfer knowledge
- Develop fit for purpose learning content with the learner at the centre using the most appropriate delivery method (whether that is virtual reality, eLearning, video learning, on job training resources, presentations, written assessments or other)
- Design learning content that meets the defined quality assurance framework and adheres to internal Brand guidelines
- Complete periodic revision of learning content with consideration for new or updated legal requirements, content accuracy and currency and effectiveness of knowledge transfer
- Continually seek out new and emerging ways of effectively engaging with learners to drive innovation and efficiency improvements
- Manage competing priorities with multiple stakeholders
- Rigorously defend the minimum standards required to support learning delivery across the complete aluminum value chain of Pacific Operations
- Design learning content to be transferable where it makes business sense through programmatic content development
About you
- University degree or equivalent in Adult Learning, Instructional Design, Graphic Design, or similar (preferred)
- Proficient in the use of Adobe Creative Cloud (Photoshop, illustrator, InDesign)
- Experience in user experience design or user centered design practices
- Proficient in Microsoft 365 suite
- High level of attention to detail
- Proven problem identification and solving ability
- Professional management of stakeholders
- Work across location boundaries to support the broader Pacific Operations business
- Successfully designed and delivered learning content that transfers knowledge
- Timely and in scope project delivery
- Partnering with multiple stakeholders to achieve business objectives
- Influencing without authority and working as part of a larger L&D community
