About the Laboratory
The “HSE analytical Laboratory” at Bell Bay Aluminium (RioTinto) is seeking a laboratory analyst to join our highly motivated team. We are a passionate and caring team consisting of 5 people, who pride themselves on being professional while being dedicated to a safe working environment.
The laboratory is responsible for analysing raw materials, process samples and environmental monitoring. We are a N.A.T.A. accredited laboratory, with a focus on quality and supplying timely accurate results to our customers.
About The Role
As a laboratory analyst you will report to the laboratory crew leader and your responsibilities will consist of but not limited to:
Environmental:
- Monitoring of ambient air for fluoride and sulphur dioxide.
- Analysing water and wastewater via:
- Ise probe methods
- Atomic absorption spectroscopy
- Sanseries continuous flow analytical methods
- Spectrophotometry
- Various infield sampling methods
Process Control and Raw Materials:
- Sample Preparation – splitting, crushing, pulverising and fusing beads for XRF analysis
- XRD and XRF analysis – “X-ray powder diffraction” and “X-ray fluorescence”
- Physical analysis – sieve sizing, density, moistures and loss on Ignitions
- Carbon anode testing – density, air permeability, electrical resistivity and XRD analysis
Administration:
- Reporting results to customers
- Procedure reviews and updates
- Purchasing replacement stock
- Calibration of various equipment

Skills and experience required to succeed in this role:
- A Certificate in Laboratory Techniques (currently studying towards or completed) will be viewed favourably, but is not essential
- Practical laboratory experience in a commercial laboratory would also be advantageous
- Strong computer skills and experience using Microsoft Word and Excel
- Demonstrated compliance to Quality / Safety standards, procedures and practices
- High degree of accuracy and attention to detail
- Well-developed verbal and written communication skills
- The ability to work independently as well as in a team
