About the role

An opportunity has arisen for an experienced Laboratory Operator to join our Nammuldi Operations team on a permanent basis to collect and prepare samples for physical and chemical analysis to identify tonnage grade, all within accordance of the safety, environmental and statutory requirements. This role is a great opportunity for an individual with an understanding of quality control and quality assurance.

Working on an 8 day on, 6 day off & 7 nights on, 7 days off (Wed-Wed) FIFO roster and reporting to the Laboratory Supervisor, you will be:

  • Actively working within Rio Tinto’s Safety Policies and Procedures and support team members in the same manner to achieve and maintain zero injury and occupational illness.
  • Preparing and analysing process plant and pit samples appropriately
  • Performing equipment checks and calibration checks in order to maintain the continuous operation of the sampling devices, transport systems and robotic preparation cells
  • Collecting and preparing samples in accordance with procedures, ensuring samples are totally representative
  • Monitoring, fault finding and escalating non-conformance's that occur with preparation and analytical equipment or non-compliance's with analytical data
  • Communicating with Geology, Grade control, Production and Metallurgical teams to ensure the quality of sample and grade of iron ore is produced at required limits to be transported to the coast

About you

To be successfully considered for this role, you will have:

  • Experience as a Laboratory Operator in a mining environment
  • Experience with the mentioned computers systems as well as Microsoft office an Excel
  • Strong analytical and mechanical aptitude to diagnose faults and problems in laboratory equipment and systems
  • The ability to make informed decisions and act promptly when dealing with breakdowns and stoppages
  • The ability to perform multiple tasks at the same time.
  • An Australian manual C-Class Drivers licence

It will also be beneficial if you have: 

  • Mechanical problem-solving skills on laboratory equipment
  • Experience in quality assurance or quality control
  • A Certificate III or higher in Laboratory Operations or a related discipline
  • Experience working shift work
