We are looking for a Supervisor Laboratory to lead and support our Mining Operations in Weipa and Amrun to achieve product quality control from mine to market. The results from the laboratories contribute to many business decisions and are a critical part of the operations process.

The laboratories prepare and analyse bauxite samples taken for both internal (mining/exploration) and external (shipping) customers from the Amrun, Andoom and East Weipa bauxite mines.

Working Monday to Friday, and reporting to the Laboratory Specialist, you will be:

  • Leading the day to day operations of the Laboratory and it’s people including providing visible leadership, driving positive safety culture and ensuring safety standards are upheld
  • Directing, allocating, and performing tasks required to optimize and maintain the Laboratory’s assets, technologies and resources
  • Leading by example, communicating effectively and ensuring values of the business are adhered to
  • Supporting, coaching and mentoring the Laboratory team in the form of training and development for current, new or improved methods and procedures;
  • Producing ancillary reports for the Laboratory and customers;
  • Leading the continuous improvement and development of Laboratory methods and procedures to ensure that industry best practice is maintained;

  • Frontline leadership experience in a Laboratory, industrial field or similar
  • Experience in troubleshooting and working with data to analyse and prepare reports and reccomendations
  • High level computer literacy and proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite

It will also be desirable if you have:

  • A bachelor degree in chemistry or relevant experience
  • Analytical chemistry experience (3-5years)
  • An understanding of quality systems - particularly ISO 17025 or ISO 9001
  • Experience in Laboratory Quality Management systems, LIMS, SAP
  • Cert IV in Training and Assessing, or equivalent
  • Working knowledge of XRF calibration and operation

This position is a residential role in Weipa. The successful applicant will be supported with relocation if coming from outside of Weipa and will be eligible for company housing. This role’s shift arrangement is Monday to Friday Day work only with the option to participate in a condensed work arrangement where you would have every second Friday off.

Where you will be working

Rio Tinto Weipa is located 900km north-west of Cairns on the Gulf of Carpentaria and has been operating for over 50 years. Over the years, it has developed into a vibrant and diverse cultural hub of the Western Cape. Weipa offers a coastal community rich in geographical beauty and cultural heritage that provides families with opportunities to participate in leisure activities, sports and community events. Construction of the Amrun mining operation, located 40 kilometres southwest of Weipa, was completed in late 2018 expanding our bauxite operations to continue production from one of the world’s premier bauxite deposits.
