Rio Tinto Weipa is located 900km north-west of Cairns on the Gulf of Carpentaria and has been operating for over 50 years. The Amrun Mine Site is located 40 kilometers southwest of Weipa with a life expectancy of 40 plus years to expand our bauxite operations and continue production from one of the world’s premier bauxite deposits. This expansion will strengthen the economy and provide exciting opportunities for the people of Cape York and Queensland for future generations.

About the role

We are looking for a Land & Rehabilitation Technical Officer to support the coordination and execution of key land management programs to facilitate the operating requirements in relation to regulatory and stakeholder expectations.

This role is a great opportunity for somebody who is passionate about land management to contribute to the success of our Land & Rehabilitation program whilst advancing their career with a global mining leader. Working a 44hour week which can be Monday-Friday or a compressed 9-day fortnight and reporting to the Superintendent Land & Rehabilitation, you will be: 

  • Developing and maintaining land management projects
  • Maintaining the plan and schedule of work for Land & Rehabilitation Operations Team
  • Supporting threatened species research project; supporting field studies
  • Support a variety of land management operations inclusive of the annual fire management program, feral animal management and weed management
  • Ensure operational readiness for the annual rehabilitation program
  • Schedule and management of traditional owner on country engagements – rehabilitation operations, on lease and community seed collection programs and other land management activities.

About you

To succeed in this role, you will have: 

  • Experience related to land management operations
  • Experience with rehabilitation strategy and management programs
  • Experience supporting/leading projects
  • Experience in managing multiple contractors and consultants in regard to environmental studies
  • Ability to work with multiple stakeholders both internal and external

It will also be beneficial if you have: 

  • Experience using GIS
  • Tertiary education in environment/land management or agricultural operations
  • Experience in working with traditional owners on a variety of land management projects

Where you will be working

Our Weipa Operations includes three bauxite mines, processing facilities, ship loaders, an export wharf, two ports, power stations, a rail network and ferry terminals. Located on the Western Cape York Peninsula in Far North Queensland, each year the operation produces more than 35 million tonnes of bauxite.

Our operations are supported by a 1,900-strong workforce—including 26 per cent who are women and 25 per cent Indigenous employees. Activities include mine operations, maintenance, asset management, ports, cultural heritage management, and processing facility management.

The development of our new mine, Amrun, which was completed in 2018, will extend the life of our Weipa bauxite operations by decades to come and significantly build on our 55-year history on the Western Cape.
