About Olympic Dam

Olympic Dam is located near the town of Roxby Downs in South Australia.  Discovered in 1975, Olympic Dam has mined and produced copper, gold, uranium, and silver since 1988.  The Olympic Dam Geoscience team is currently undertaking an underground and surface diamond drill program to expand understanding of the resource potential of Olympic Dam, to inform future strategic pathways for the Asset.

About the Role

The Lead Exploration Geologist is responsible for the safe planning, execution, and interpretation of all near mine exploration work programs at Olympic Dam. 

Tasks must be performed safely and sustainably in compliance with workplace procedures and aligned with BHP’s Code of Conduct.  Leading an enthusiastic team of Geologists, the role provides leadership development whilst demanding technical excellence.

Reporting to the Superintendent Exploration and Strategy, your key accountabilities will include:

  • Ensuring safe systems of work are in place and effective for surface and underground drilling activities and geophysical surveys
  • Leading and coaching quality Field Leadership observations, risk assessments, work management and quality Event investigations
  • QAQC of drill holes and geophysical surveys
  • Target generation
  • Collaborating with medium and long term stakeholders to understand strategic pathways for the Asset and prioritise work programs accordingly
  • Delivering work programs on time and on budget

About You

The successful candidate, will ideally possess the following:

  • Proven ability to lead by example; hold yourself and others accountable and coach others in “Safety Leadership”
  • Previous experience leading a mine team or near mine exploration team
  • Ability to work underground
  • Deep directional diamond drilling experience
  • Seismic interpretation experience
  • Previous IOCG experience preferable
  • Previous budget tracking experience preferable
