The Opportunity – Permanent, Full Time Position
A newly created opportunity has arisen to join the Greenfields Exploration team as Lead - Health Safety & Environment, where you will provide general and specialist Health, Safety, Security and Environment (HSSE) leadership and support to the Greenfields Exploration team, and other sub-functions under the Development Group.
Reporting to the Senior Manager – Greenfields Exploration and Geoscience, core role accountabilities will be delivered across six key business areas that include:
Health and Safety
- Support Greenfields Exploration leadership to ensure activities conform to the appropriate South32 standard, systems, processes, and critical controls for Greenfields Exploration material risks.
- Effectively manage the health and safety component of the Injury Management processes, and the fitness for work program
- Ensures suitable and effective regional / project Emergency Response plans are developed, tested, and continuously improved.
Communication
- Develop sound working relationships based on mutual trust, with key Greenfields Exploration stakeholders, to ensure HSSE work is executed in alignment with the requirements of the South32 Standards and Greenfield Exploration protocols.
- Acts as a conduit for Corporate HSSE initiatives in Greenfields Exploration and ensures initiatives are cascaded to the regions in a manner that is fit for purpose for Greenfields Exploration to meet their key deliverables.
Coaching and Capability
- Maintains an external network of HSSE related contractors and consultants recognised as experts in specialised areas associated with Greenfields Exploration
- Provide specialist HSSE support to the global Greenfields Exploration team, including coaching and facilitating risk assessments to identify and implement appropriate controls at the project / activity level, and to follow-up verification for control effectiveness.
- Maintain an understanding of regionally - available HSSE resources; and develops and maintains relationships with third parties with regional or project-specific expert knowledge.
Reporting and Verification
- Maintain oversight on HSSE risk performance and management and develop a strategy of continuous improvement that meets the changing needs and risk profile of Greenfields Exploration.
- Develop and maintain governance of all aspects of Greenfields Exploration reporting including data integrity, accuracy and timeliness
- Ensure all aspects of regulatory reporting are conducted to the required quality and delivered in a timely manner.
- Monitor Greenfields Exploration HSSE process metrics and lead initiatives to improve the planning and execution of HSSE function owned work, and work associated with HSSE critical controls.
- Prepares and reports monthly safety statistics and Lead Indicators for all Greenfields Exploration Regions.
Acquisition and Operations Planning
- Provides facilitation to Acquisition and Operations planning risk workshops.
- Work with Regional HSEC Specialists, Project Delivery and Greenfields Exploration teams to plan for and execute the safe transition of Joint Venture projects into the South32 portfolio.
- Supports Acquisition and Operations planning in HSEC and Risk-related issues.
Coaching and Training
- Drive the implementation of group and corporate Occupational Health & Safety programs and ensure the Greenfields Exploration workforce is informed and trained to identify hazards, manage risk, and utilize safe work practices.
About You
You will be required to have the following:
- Minimum 15 years’ experience in HSSE role for global exploration groups or resource industry groups
- Experience in advising and working with Exploration teams will be highly regarded.
- International experience
- Well-developed communication, interpersonal, negotiation and facilitation skills.
- Demonstrated capability to develop sound working relationships based on trust, required to negotiate, and influence both internal and external stakeholders, including:
- Greenfields Leadership Team
- Regulators
- Exploration field teams, contractors, and consultants
- Community stakeholders
Qualifications
- Minimum of a bachelor's degree with a preference in a health sciences discipline such as Industrial Hygiene or Occupational Health and Safety required.

This role will be based at our corporate office in the heart of Perth CBD, negotiable for the successful candidate
