About the Role

As a Lead Mine Design Engineer, you will be responsible for leading the Mine Design team in optimising their underground drill and blast designs to enable the safe extraction of stopes via fit-for-purpose plans. This role offers an opportunity to advance your technical and leadership capabilities, against the backdrop of a world-class, complex orebody.

This is a site based role at Olympic Dam on a 5 days on, 2 days off, 4 days on 3 days off roster FIFO ex Adelaide roster. 

In this position you will:

  • Lead a team of Mine Design Engineers and Mine Design Technicians to deliver safe, executable plans to underground operations.
  • Review and validate the controls in place to ensure that designs for simultaneous activities support safe production.
  • Collaborate with various Technical and Operational teams, in the formulation of Drill and Blast designs and stope planning activities to meet the needs of the 3 month schedule.
  • Prioritise, monitor and maintain progress for all design work, using the relevant team tools.
  • Promote and practice a continual improvement mindset.
  • Assist with the development and improvement of all documentation that governs the teams work.
  • Continually demonstrate the BHP Charter Values.

About You

You will possess in the following:

  • Degree Qualified in Mining Engineering or equivalent, and a minimum of five years industry experience.
  • Completion of practical underground time will be highly advantageous.
  • A solid understanding of the risks involved in executing drill & blast plans, and an ability to facilitate safety discussions with stakeholders to verify whether the controls in place are acceptable.
  • A high level of technical profiency in regard to underground Drill & Blast design with a demonstrable record of good outcomes.
  • Excellent time management enabling you to effectively prioritise your work; and that of the team, in order to serve our customers’ needs.
  • Proficiency with Deswik mining software and a high level of competency in Microsoft Excel.
  • A proven track record in developing the skills of more junior technical people.
  • Experience leading teams whereby you have had to motivate your team in order to achieve an outcome.
  • Identify and implement opportunities to improve productivity, efficiency and cost effectiveness.
