Location
This role will be offered as a FIFO based role from Perth on a 4D/3X or 5D/2X 4D/3X roster, but those in pursuit of flexible work arrangements are encouraged to apply.
Please note that to prepare us for the future of renewables and to further develop our relationships with our site stakeholders we are working towards relocating our Network Control team to the Perth office in mid-late 2023. Our office is located in the township of Newman, Western Australia and our employees enjoy access to well-established education services, shopping, gym, pool, restaurants and medical facilities.
About the Role
As part of the BHP Iron Ore Network Operator, the High Voltage (HV) & Power Operations team is responsible for the Operation of our HV transmission and distribution network across the Pilbara. The successful candidate will lead a dynamic team responsible for providing overarching control of the Inland HV network, this function is integral to all aspects of network planning, execution, maintenance and operation. As well as implement improvements, which contribute to our purpose of sustainably powering our community and operations to create a better world. Our Network Controllers are responsible for ensuring the HV transmission and distribution networks are operated within design parameters and play a key role in contributing to create a safe and controlled work environment for BHP employees and members of the public exposed to the network. Your role will be critical in the integration of renewable energy sources into the network over the next few years as WAIO works towards its decarbonisation goals and co-ordinating the relocation of the team from site to IPRO next year, which will be both challenging and exciting. Reporting to the Superintendent HV & Power Operations, the primary focus of this role is to: • Develop a high performing and cohesive team along with mentoring talent for succession focused on providing exceptional operational engineering support to our stakeholders • Ensure all HV transmission and distribution systems are operated in accordance with BHP procedures, industry best practice and relevant regulatory requirements and within design parameters • Assist Network Controllers during power outages and ensure key stakeholders are informed through key stages of an outage. Following power restoration, ensure outages have been captured in the register and trigger investigation/root cause analysis with Reliability team where required • Regularly review the performance of the network using available software platforms and registers to identify opportunities for improvement or areas of concern and work collaboratively with stakeholders to implement solutions. Trigger practical problem solving sessions where appropriate • Manage stakeholder relationships and enhance our communication with the Execution, Planning, Projects and Reliability teams to ensure safe, reliable and efficient operation of our network. United by a shared desire to continually improve our network, systems and processes • Demonstrate safety leadership by supporting the Field Leadership program to continuously improve safety performance and contribute to ensuring Material Risks are managed • Report on monthly performance of the network • Ensure Network Control procedures are regularly reviewed and remain current.
About You
We are looking for individuals who possess the following characteristics: • Network Controller, Electrical Trade or Electrical Engineering background with previous experience in an Electrical Utility, Mining or related industry • Knowledge in power systems operations and experience utilising SCADA • Understanding of standards and regulations related to Network Operators • High Voltage switching and experience writing high voltage switching programs highly desirable • Network load flow analysis experience utilising software such as PowerFactory highly desirable • Operation of renewable technologies is highly desirable • Strong analytical skills to determine cause of faults and make decisions accordingly to safely restore power • Demonstrated leadership experience with a focus on working collaboratively and developing teams • Have a commitment to safety and genuine care for their team • Supporting the health and wellbeing and sustainable development of team members • Committed and able to drive an inclusive and diverse culture • Strong stakeholder management, project management and analytical skills • Ability to engage with all levels of the business from frontline employees to higher-level management through good verbal, written and presentation communication skills • Ability to deal with ambiguity, problem solve and react to unplanned situations • Ability to engage with all levels of the business from frontline employees to higher-level management through good verbal, written and presentation communication skills. • Ability and desire to link their purpose in the team with the purpose of our organisation • Willingness to investigate and understand root causes and develop effective countermeasures.
