About the Role

As a Lead, Projects Commercial (Olympic Dam Asset Projects), you will work collaboratively with Commercial teams, Olympic Dam Asset Project (ODAP) Teams, Project Controls and other Functions to successfully deliver projects in the ODAP portfolio. The successful candidate will demonstrate Charter Values through their leadership and will lead and develop a diverse team of contract professionals to deliver the contracting strategy and world class end to end contract management for the project.

  • Drive development of Project Execution and Contracting Strategies to preserve and improve WAAP portfolio value.  
  • Lead and influence the selection and implementation of a wider range of contract models / pricing models including incentivization and collaborative contracting arrangements and bundling strategies.
  • Understand local market conditions to meet individual project portfolio requirements.  
  • Ensure that market engagement is planned and executed through the procurement lifecycle to meet project schedule, quality and cost objectives.          

Accountabilities

  • Manage project contracts and procurement activities.  
  • Some site travel as and when required.                                                                                        
  • Manage Contractor and contract performance, monitoring and reporting to support the Projects Community  
  • Establish and lead relationships with key stakeholders to become a highly valued contract expert.  
  • Provide leadership that will ensure consistent & high performance.   
  • Manage Supplier Relationship Management while working collaboratively with projects and cross functional stakeholders.  
  • Lead the pursuit of projects, operational and commercial excellence through continuous improvement.  
  • Apply sound commercial judgement around application of contractual terms and conditions.   
  • Lead the implementation of appropriate systems, and processes based on project risk and complexity.  
  • Ensure the integrity and maintenance of contracts in SAP/contract management systems (e.g., GCMS, ProCon) and other contract management systems as required.  
  • Take responsibility for and provide leadership on claims prevention, assessment and resolution by applying expert knowledge and advice.  
  • Actively participate and drive BHP Operating Model (BOS) implementation within the team and improvement initiatives. 
  • Drive ODAP Commercial team performance against the Business Plan and relevant KPI’s.

About You

To be successful in this role you will be a dedicated and passionate commercial professional with 8+ years’ experience in capital projects commercial, contracting strategy development, tendering, contract formation, negotiation and management, claims prevention and claims negotiation. Tertiary qualifications in Management, Economics, Quantity Surveying, Construction Management / Construction Science, Legal (Construction Law) or related discipline is preferred.  

Previous leadership experience is a plus.

  • Developed understanding of the contract life cycle from strategy identification and development to procurement to contract close out.

  • Pragmatic commercial outlook and judgement (balances business value vs. risk) to deliver best outcomes for Project.
  • Collaborative mindset and advanced interpersonal skills  
  • Proven ability to operate effectively in complex and ambiguous environment.  
  • Ability to think laterally resolving issues independently, influencing change, working autonomously with attention to detail in an organized and objective manner.  
  • Good understanding of capital projects and functional governance processes 
  • A high degree of business acumen with deep understanding of projects execution, risks and strategies; experience in strategic thinking, robust planning and risk management. 
  • Strong communication skills both written and verbal. Ability to tailor communications and interactions to a wide variety of stakeholder groups.
