The Opportunity – Permanent, Full Time Position

This position of Lead Technical Governance (Tailings) will be responsible for assisting with the global leadership of South32 dam management and stewardship, and governance across all regions and investments.  The role provides an effective risk management function to South32 and monitors the implementation of risk management practices in the design, construction, operation, and closure of dam facilities in accordance with the relevant professional codes and industry practices.

The lead is responsible for the framework of identifying risks, developing, implementing, and managing controls adequate for the company to prevent catastrophic failures of tailings storage facilities.  

Reporting to the Senior Manager Tailings Stewardship, key role accountabilities include:

  • Establish, implement, maintain, and verify policy, defining the risk management framework, roles and responsibilities, setting goals for implementation
  • Identifying known and emerging issues and shifts in the organization’s implicit risk appetite
  • Technical review of documentation relating to tailings and water dams for all stages of development from inception to closure
  • Provide stewardship and governance for all tailings storage facilities and dams across the company
  • Represent the company through various Joint Venture Partners and external activities
  • Provide governance for all dam facilities across the company
  • Develop and undertake governance risk controls, including peer reviews, periodic internal technical audits of the underlying work, independent audits of new facilities, annual performance metrics. Participation in team development and upskilling activities, supporting an inclusive and high performing team environment consistent with South32 values, LEADership Model and our Team Charter
  • Facilitating and monitoring implementation of effective risk management practices by operational management
  • Monitoring the adequacy and effectiveness of internal control, accuracy and completeness of reporting, compliance with laws and regulations, and timely remediation of deficiencies
  • Roll-up of key metrics from specific programs for internal company analysis and reporting to Regional and Corporate levels.
  • Implement and execute processes to educate and, where warranted, train other professionals involved in the management of tailings and dams
  • Represent the company through various JVP and external activities

 About You

 We would like to hear from professionals with the following skills:

  • Extensive experience in tailings and dam management (including design, construction, operation and dam safety) across several commodities
  • Deep knowledge in tailing and dams and of professional standards and regulations 
  • A knowledge of materials handling, tailings rheology, filtration and thickening of base metals is highly desirable. 
  • Auditing & training skills
  • Demonstrated ability to influence decisions and performance at both the operational and management level through effective written and verbal communication
  • Demonstrated ability to develop and maintain sound working relationships (face-to-face and remote) 
  • Flexibility and the ability to adapt to changing business needs and circumstances 
  • Excellent skills in managing time, setting priorities, planning, and organising 
  • Capable of working with minimal supervision and able to self-manage priorities, with focus on high quality outputs and attention to detail. 
  • Planning and coordination of activities and personnel to deliver the stated results
  • Proven ability to facilitate teamwork, engineer consensus, knowledge sharing and promote collaboration across organisations without direct line management authority.
  • A demonstrated ability for the attention to detail, problem solving skills, objective & critical thinking
  • Well-developed oral and written communication skills with experience at communicating at all levels in the organisation, particularly to executive management
  • Ability to quickly analyse issues and provide solutions

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree (Civil/Geotechnical), Master or PhD in a relevant field desirable

Location

Ideally, this role will be based at our office in Perth, WA, however other locations will be considered dependent on applicant. We understand and value the benefits flexibility brings and operate a hybrid work model (in the office and from home)
