Within our company wide Information Systems & Technology function, we are building an internal software development and delivery team focusing on high value and strategic products for the digital transformation of Rio Tinto.

About the role

We are looking for someone eager to bring our product ideas to life, ensuring the best user experience through accessible and attractive user interface (UI). Someone willing to communicate and build rapport with different stakeholders: business partners, developers, product owners, the leadership team and user experience (UX) designers to understand their needs and deliver high-quality products.

As the preferred UI Developer, you will create concepts and creative designs that meet UX needs and brand standards. You will use your knowledge of visual design to create engaging interfaces for different software, applications, and platforms. You will help create beautiful and innovative user interfaces through visual exploration, prototyping, and asset production.

Responsibilities

  • The Lead UI Developer will collaborate with product management and engineering team members to deliver high quality and creative products.
  • Work with developers to deploy UI designs.
  • Assist in the creation and maintenance of design systems to ensure consistency across Company design teams and digital properties.
  • Help build and document a design system from existing style guide requirements.
  • Create design assets according to our brand guidelines, putting the user first.
  • Continually evaluate the UI based on feedback from users, user research, and leads.
  • Participate in the development of software user manuals and other documentation.
  • Assist in the training of less experienced staff (graduates, juniors, vacation students).
  • Work on projects of varying length and complexity.
  • Take ownership of projects to safeguard the UI concept.
  • Advise on information architecture design based on research and industry best practice.
  • Create elegant and compelling designs that can be scaled cross-platform.
  • Prototype and present your designs to peers and senior stakeholders.
  • Establish and promote design best practice guidelines and standards.
  • Confidently present the team’s work to internal stakeholders, justifying the design solutions and collecting feedback.
  • Define and advocate for the design priorities on the roadmap for apps, mobile, web and platforms.

About you

Essential  

  • Experience working with and contributing to design systems, style guides, and pattern libraries.
  • Demonstrated record of delivering high-quality, end-to-end designs for significant web-based applications or platforms.
  • Ability to look at business needs and technical capabilities to devise design solutions
  • Knowledge of user-centered design methodology, including best practice principles and tools used.
  • Experience in an Agile environment, Design Sprints, Design Thinking Model
  • Familiarity with design systems, atomic design concepts, and component lifecycles
  • Experience designing for accessibility and international audiences.
  • Bachelor’s degree level or holds a relevant professional qualification, I.e. Bachelor of IT, Computer Science, Software Engineering etc.
  • Minimum of 5+ years of relevant experience
  • Knowledge of Graphic Design (Visual Communication), Brand & Identity Design
  • Experience designing cross-platform (Responsive design, Native Mobile Apps).
  • Proficiency in:
    • Material Design
    • UI Design Tools, e.g. Figma, Sketch, Axure RP, and/or Adobe Xd
    • Microsoft Office

Desirable  

  • Proficiency in more than one design tool
  • Proficiency in:
    • React
    • CSS / HTML
    • JavaScript
    • Sketch
    • After Effects
    • InVision
