About the Role
This role will serve as a Legal Counsel for BHP’s Iron Ore business in Australia. The role will report into the Head of Legal for Western Australia Iron Ore (WAIO) and Nickel West (NiW).
The role is based in Perth, Western Australia with occasional travel to site required.
Responsibilities include:
- Provide legal advice and support across the Iron Ore business with a particular focus on business development, commercial agreements, royalty, joint venture and State Agreement issues.
- Provide advice that is strategic, clear and concise on matters of significant complexity and establish a trusted advisor relationship with key asset stakeholders.
- Interface with global legal and other functions including Business Development, Approvals, Corporate Affairs, Commercial and Indigenous Engagement.
- Accountable for the identification of legal risks that may result in adverse outcomes for the business and advise client groups on workable measures to resolve or mitigate these risks.
- Effectively interface and manage engagements with external law firms.

About You
You will be a legal professional with the highest standards of ethics and integrity. To be successful, you must possess a strong work ethic and have the ability to work independently.
The following is essential:
- Law firm experience with some in-house experience strongly preferred
- 4+ years legal experience and current Australian practicing certificate
- Experience involving corporate transactions and contract negotiations and advising on regulatory, contractual and operational matters
- Experience advising on the legal aspects of health, safety, environmental, government, regulatory and community affairs matters
- Demonstrated and effective cross-functional and multi-jurisdictional collaboration
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
- Demonstrated experience advising and interacting with senior leaders
- Experience working in a matrix model with a multinational corporation (preferred).
