About the Role

Reporting to the Head of Legal for Technology and Procurement, this role is accountable for providing legal support and advice to the Technology, Data Privacy and Data Ethics teams. The role is regarded as a subject matter expert on privacy and cybersecurity related matters and provides advice to ensure that cyber and data related legal risks are identified and managed in accordance with the BHP Charter Values and commercial objectives. 

As a Specialist, the role liaises with senior stakeholders on a regular basis and acts as a key point of contact on strategic Cybersecurity, Data Strategy and Data Privacy & Data Ethics initiatives.

Key accountabilities include, but are not limited to: 

  • Provide legal advice to Technology and Data Privacy & Data Ethics on cybersecurity and data-related matters
  • Establish relationships with the Cybersecurity and Data Strategy teams within Technology, the Data Privacy & Data Ethics team, Communications, Government Relations and other relevant stakeholders 
  • Identify legal risks and provide advice on the management of cybersecurity- and data-related legal risks
  • Engage with other Legal teams to ensure delivery of legal support to Technology, Data Privacy & Data Ethics and other stakeholders
  • Contribute to knowledge management activities as required, including training to Legal and relevant stakeholders on key areas of expertise (e.g., cybersecurity, data strategy, data ethics and privacy).

About You

Proactive in nature, our ideal candidate will possess strong business acumen and interpersonal skills, developed from experience working in a leading law firm or international organisation. 

To be successful in this role you must possess certification to practice law in Australia, along with the following knowledge and demonstrated experience:

  • Knowledge of Australian and other relevant cybersecurity and privacy laws.
  • Delivery of advice on complex cybersecurity and privacy issues, including regulatory compliance, corporate governance, process improvement and incident response
  • Competency across legal aspects of data strategy, data ethics and related topics
  • Development and delivery of relevant and up-to-date training and guidance materials
  • Influencing and negotiating skills 
  • Ability to operate independently, with evidence of having used significant judgement to manage legal risk. 

International Association of Privacy Professionals (IAPP) certification is desired, but not essential.
