About the role

Rio Tinto is on a journey to transform our partnerships with Traditional Owners, including evolving our participation agreements. This role is key to driving that transformation, creating and executing strategies to modernise our ways of working in collaboration with Traditional Owner groups. You will lead high-impact engagements and agreement making, shaping the future of these partnerships.

Your key responsibilities for this role will include:

  • Lead agreement making negotiations with Traditional Owners including the development of approaches to agreement negotiation items
  • Develop and oversee stakeholder engagement strategies  
  • Analyse and synthesise existing and potential partnership approaches to inform agreement making
  • Regularly review and align plans to Rio Tinto Iron Ore’s strategy, ensuring negotiated agreements meet commitments and regulatory standards
  • Champion engagement best practices, incorporating Traditional Owner feedback and context, Rio Tinto Iron Ore priorities, and regulations
  • Build and nurture relationships with Traditional Owner stakeholders and their representative bodies
  • Prepare and lead engagements with Traditional Owner stakeholders as part of agreement making
  • Work across internal teams to support genuine partnerships with Indigenous communities and align with future asset development plans

What you’ll bring

You will bring the following attributes, skills and experiences to ensure your success within this role:

  • Credible negotiations skills with experience leading complex agreements
  • Bachelors’ or higher degree in finance, business law, native title, indigenous affairs or other relevant field
  • Understanding of Indigenous cultures
  • Traditional owner or indigenous peoples engagement
  • Strategic thinking and stakeholder engagement
  • Agreement making and negotiation
  • Ability to partner effectively to deliver outcomes
  • Strong communication skills
  • Critical thinking and ability to synthesise information into clear narrative
  • Complex decision making.

Where you’ll be working  

This role will be offered at full time capacity and be based at our Perth Central Park office, nestled in the cities CBD. Adhoc site travel will be expected for this role.

We are one of the world’s leading producers and exporters of iron ore.
