About the role
The Manager, Business Analysis (BA) is responsible for growing and leading a talented team of business analysts who are part of cross-functional teams creating software products for business units across Rio Tinto. The Manager, Business Analysis will grow and develop the BA team, provide strong guidance and leadership, define common strategies and practices, and ensure their implementation across all products.
The Manager BA will have strong experience in the creation of software products following modern agile methodologies and will use that experience to act as an advisor in best practices and provide mentorship to their direct team of business analysts. They will be a dynamic and highly experienced technical leader with outstanding communication, people leadership, and stakeholder engagement skills.
What you will do
As the Manager, Business Analysis you will:
- Lead and manage the team of Business Analysts (from junior to lead levels) within the P&SD (Products and Software Development) group, including leading leaders, providing mentorship, guidance, and support to ensure high-quality deliverables, professional growth, and overall team success.
- Define and communicate common strategies, methodologies, and frameworks for business analysis activities across the portfolio and through the entire product development lifecycle, promoting consistency, quality and best practices.
- Oversee the creation, maintenance and consistent application of required supporting documentation following best practices within an agile framework (e.g. business rules, process flows, user stories etc).
- Collaborate closely with peers within the Product, Engineering and Delivery functions to build high performance cross-functional teams who deliver high quality products and platforms to Rio Tinto.
- Manage and prioritize BA team resources, including collaboration with other managers and stakeholders, to meet important deadlines while ensuring efficient utilization of team members’ skills and expertise.
- Lead or participate in cross-functional initiatives, representing the BA function, contributing to strategic decisions, and driving alignment between business needs and technical solutions.
- Act as a trusted advisor to agile teams, including on-occasion providing hands-on assistance in critical initiatives and stakeholder engagements.
- Foster a culture of continuous improvement within the BA team, encouraging knowledge sharing, promoting innovation, and identifying opportunities to enhance BA practices and processes.
- Establish clear objectives and performance expectations for groups and individuals, enabling the team to deliver high-quality design solutions.
- Define career paths and growth opportunities for BAs, conducting regular performance evaluations, identifying training needs, and recommending resources and development plans to upskill the team.
- Foster ongoing learning and growth within the team by providing feedback, coaching, and career development opportunities.
- Collaborate with the People Function to attract and recruit top BA talent, ensuring the team is equipped with the skills and capabilities required to meet the organization's goals.
- Lead the creation of a Community of Practice (CoP) for Business Analysis within the wider IS&T function and promote a collaborative environment, sharing of knowledge, and development of domain-specific skills within the CoP.
- Stay up-to-date with industry trends, emerging technologies, and best practices in business analysis, and guide the team in adopting relevant methodologies, tools, and techniques.
- Developing a profile as a speaker, writer and influencer beyond the organization through conference speaking and attendance, community events and publishing.
What we are looking for
- Bachelor's degree in Business Administration, Computer Science, or a related field. Relevant certifications, including Agile (e.g. CBAP, PMI-PBA etc) are a plus.
- 3+ years proven experience as a Business Analyst Lead and/or Manager, with a strong track record of leading and managing large teams, preferably in an agile environment.
- Demonstrated ability to lead and inspire a team, including leading leaders, fostering creativity, collaboration, and professional growth.
- Strong understanding of business analysis principles, methodologies, and techniques, with experience in both traditional and agile approaches.
- Experience in growing the business analysis capability in large complex environment/s with diverse business needs and challenges.
- Experience in mentoring, coaching, developing and leading business analysts with the ability to create, grow, and motivate a diverse team.
- Strong understanding of agile development frameworks & methodologies (Scrum, Kanban) and experience working collaboratively with agile teams.
- Excellent communication and presentation skills, with the ability to convey complex information in a clear and understandable manner to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
- Experience in collaborating with software developers, solution architects, testers, and other technical team members to facilitate effective communication and collaboration.
- Solid project management skills, with the ability to prioritize tasks, manage resources, and meet project deadlines.
- Demonstrated expertise in stakeholder management, with the ability to effectively communicate, influence, and build relationships at all levels of the organization.
- Proven ability to provide hands-on assistance in critical projects, leveraging business analysis skills to drive successful outcomes.
- Proactive mindset with the ability to anticipate and address challenges, identify opportunities for improvement, and drive change within the BA team.
