Rio Tinto Energy & Climate (RTEC) is a new global team focused on prioritising and accelerating our decarbonisation efforts to deliver on our climate commitments while ensuring our business is well positioned for the future low-carbon economy. Led by the Chief Decarbonisation Officer, the Energy & Climate team works collaboratively across the business to drive delivery of the Group climate strategy and address our key sources of carbon emissions.

The Climate Policy and Advocacy team, within Energy & Climate, monitors and assesses climate policy and its implications for our business across our geographies, at a regional, national and international level. The team is accountable for the development of Rio Tinto’s climate policy positions to support effective stakeholder engagement.
We are looking for a Manager – Climate Policy and Advocacy to join the team as a subject matter expert for Australian and New Zealand, Climate Regulation and Policy. In order to meet the needs of a rapidly evolving regulatory backdrop, it is necessary to adopt a centrally co-ordinated approach to the assessment and advocacy to climate related regulations and policies. The Climate Policy and Advocacy team will sit within the central Rio Tinto Energy & Climate team, to lead its global response.Reporting to the General Manager Climate Policy and Advocacy you will be responsible for:
- Understanding of regulatory opportunities, government subsidies and support in Australia and New Zealand
- Preparation, co-ordination and syndication of submissions made by Rio Tinto to proposed government policy and regulations
- Overall APAC climate policy including Safeguard mechanism
- Developing the sophisticated, strategically and commercially aligned policy narratives for use externally by Senior Leadership, External Affairs and Communications teams
- Responding to requests from policy setters and industry bodies
- Supporting Australian Executive Committee in climate policy related meetings and discussions with a wide spectrum of external stakeholders
- Participating in Australian industry subgroups and workshops where relevant
- Coordinating with internal Rio Tinto stakeholders such as the Executive Committee, Product Groups, Group Decarbonisation, Strategy, Investor Relations, Communications and External Affairs
- Ensure compliance with relevant industry regulations and standards
About you
- A background working within the policy and regulatory landscape across disciplines such as Legal, Climate or ESG
- Deep understanding of technical manufacturing, energy or engineering for the effective application of legislation
- Deep understanding of Australian regulatory and climate policy background
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
- Experience in in depth report writing
- Be a team player with can do attitude and self-motivation
- Have the ability to build rapport at all levels of the organisation
