Rio Tinto Energy & Climate is a new global team focused on prioritising and accelerating our decarbonisation efforts to deliver on our climate commitments while ensuring our business is well positioned for the future low-carbon economy. Led by the Chief Decarbonisation Officer, the Energy & Climate team works collaboratively across the business to drive delivery of the Group climate strategy and address our key sources of carbon emissions

About the role

The newly established Decarbonisation Office (DO) is central to Rio Tinto’s decarbonisation investment decisions, responsible for interrogating projects and ultimately recommending and deploying the Group’s capital into its most attractive decarbonisation investments. The DO is also responsible for carbon accounting and providing senior leadership with advanced strategic insights.

We are looking for a Manager – Decarbonisation Investment to critically assess the decarbonisation portfolio and provide leadership with the sophisticated investment recommendations needed for deployment of Group capital. Reporting to the General Manager – Decarbonisation Office, you will use your advanced commercial investment expertise to play a critical role assessing the cross-asset, cross-national, cross-technology trade-offs that exist within the decarbonisation portfolio. You will use your sophisticated analysis skills to provide recommendations for Group-level strategic investment decisions

You will be responsible for:

· Owning recommendations for Rio Tinto’s multi-billion-dollar decarbonisation investment

· Critically reviewing Global Decarbonisation Program (GDP) project fundamentals

· Developing and using evaluation tools for portfolio prioritisation and shaping

· Providing the Chief Decarbonisation Officer / GM – DO with recommendations on decarbonisation portfolio investment

· Informing key decision makers (eg. Executive Committee, Investment Committee or Rio Tinto Board) of the position of individual investments within the broader portfolio

· Holding collaborative and early discussions with GDP teams on critical constraints that will limit scope and scale of their delivery programs

· Establishing and embedding sound investment evaluation principles in the GDPs in the establishment phase of the DO

· Developing internal decarbonisation investment evaluation policy (in partnership with Business Evaluation, Group Finance, Business Analysis)

· Providing contextualised quantitative inputs to ‘downstream’ corporate functions such as Group Strategy, Investor Relations, Treasury

· Leading and collaborating on the development of capital allocation alternatives.

About you

· Outstanding business analysis, business development or commercial investment career history

· Exceptional commercial nous for investment assessment, enhancement and commercial trade offs

· Proven track record preparing and providing clear and concise investment / valuation analysis and recommendations

· Experience in the development of structured financial solutions

· Deep understanding of financial markets, corporate finance and green finance

· Strong relationship with leading corporate financial institutions preferred

· Confident ability to engage at Executive Committee level and above

· Professional qualifications as ACA / CA /CFA /MBA or equivalent would be highly recommended
