About the role

As one of the world’s largest industrial users of energy, Rio Tinto has a unique challenge in the energy transition. Rio Tinto Energy & Climate (RTEC) is a new global team focused on prioritising and accelerating our decarbonisation efforts to deliver on our climate commitments while ensuring our business is well positioned for the future low-carbon economy. Led by the Chief Decarbonisation Officer, the Energy & Climate team works collaboratively across the business to drive delivery of the Group climate strategy and address our key sources of carbon emissions.

The Manager – Energy Trading  role will sit within RTEC Pacific Renewable Energy. The team covers RT assets in Tasmania, Queensland, New South Wales and New Zealand which represents nearly 50% of RT Group carbon emissions. The team is focused on developing new energy solutions to be delivered in these four locations, reducing scope 1 and 2 footprint, enabling future growth and protecting the cost position of existing assets. The energy solutions will be delivered in partnership and require a deep understanding of and relationships within the renewable energy industry and fit for purpose commercial agreements.

The position requires someone with extensive experience in the development and long term operations of an electricity trading capability. It is suited to someone who has worked as a physical/spot energy trader and managed teams of spot traders. The person will be initially responsible for developing Rio Tinto's spot market operations and trading capability including developing the strategy, risk and compliance documentation and metrics, people and resourcing capabilities, software and tools working with internal and external partners and service providers as needed.

Extensive engagement and collaboration across Rio Tinto’s business and service units will be required. Once the capability has been successfully stood up, the person will transition to an on-going operational role leading a team of front and middle office traders and quantitative analysts in developing real-time analysis and market interfaces to minimise energy cost and risk to Rio Tinto's energy intensive asset portfolio, including integration with site demand response capabilities.

Reporting to the GM Energy Development Pacific you will be :

  • Developing Rio Tinto's energy trading and risk management strategy and operational capabilities

  • Engaging with Internal and external stakeholders to ensure the strategy is supported within the battery limits of the business

  • Ensuring compliance with applicable market rules and regulatory obligations

  • Have strong ownership of the overall function and end to end delivery of the targeted business outcomes in partnership with the quantitative risk management capabilities

  • Developing policies and procedures for the NEM

  • Interface with the rest of the RTEC and RTA teams to ensure that market information is translated to long-term portfolio and investment strategy

  • Developing tools and systems

  • Ownership of Recruitment and management of a team

What you'll bring

  • 10+ years trading experience in the National Electricity Market with experience in risk strategy evaluation and relationships with other market participants

  • Experience in building spot trading capabilities will be highly regarded

  • Independent and self directed with proven leadership experience and an ability to foster a collaborative environment

  • Ability to stay informed about energy market trends and identify opportunities that arise

  • Ability to develop, evaluate and assess software and tools for market trading

  • Ability to develop and deliver clear strategies, effectively communicate key insights and recommendations
