Manager First Nations Relations

Work Location: Fortescue’s Hedland Operations are located on the traditional lands of the Kariyarra people.

Roster: Monday – Friday (Pilbara residential role) . Site visits as required

Through purposeful and frequent engagement with Native Title Parties and Aboriginal communities, the Manager First Nations Relations will assist Fortescue to advance its mining operations, and exploration and decarbonisation activities in the Pilbara region. As a key interface between Fortescue and Native Title Parties and Aboriginal communities, the role will drive two-way information flows to keep Native Title Parties and Aboriginal communities informed of Fortescue’s work program and support requirements (including the delivery of studies and surveys) and share information received with Fortescue’s native title, cultural heritage management, Aboriginal business development, and operations teams.

Key Responsibilities include:

  • Build awareness and understanding of Fortescue (FMG and FFI) business priorities in a manner which maximises its reputation, its Environmental, Social, Governance (ESG) credentials and its current and future project approval requirements.
  • Be alert to potential community issues impacting on Fortescue and feed intelligence through the appropriate internal channels.
  • With the General Manager First Nations and Senior Manager First Nations Relations, develop and implement a consistent and effective approach to developing First Nations community stakeholder relationships which aligns with the broader strategic approach and values of Fortescue.
  • Sustain a close working relationship with the Site General Manager regarding all Native Title Party business and co-ordinate with relevant Fortescue business units to ensure timely consultation between both parties regarding planning and scheduling of permitting and approvals all other engagement as required.
  • Actively assist and participate in Native Title forums where key advocacy and membership groups are aligned with the interests of Fortescue.
  • Facilitate access for Fortescue representatives engaging with Native Title Parties
  • Facilitate access for Native Title Party representatives attending site, ensuring Site GM approval and involvement in site visits.
  • Receive and respond to Native Title Party issues raised ensuring a prompt response for all actions required following site visits, concerns raised, and community initiatives submitted to Fortescue.
  • Promote and manage the messaging and alignment across different business units so that Native Title Parties receive consistent, transparent and cohesive information.
  • Maintain records of all engagements within SRM and share with relevant Fortescue representatives so that a consistent understanding exists about the state of the relationship with a Native Title Party at any given time.
  • Coordinate an annual calendar of engagements – planning, monitoring, working group sessions, decision-making forums etc – and share with relevant stakeholders.
  • Lead as Fortescue’s Primary contact and establish and co-ordinate a one-stop-shop for all direct business relating to Native Title parties and Fortescue business.
  • Attend Native Title Party associated businesses monthly contract meetings.
  • Liaise between Site Operations, Contract Owners and Fortescue’s Aboriginal Business Development team involved in strategic business direction, planning and Native Title Party opportunities and Contracts on Site.

Qualifications and Experience:

  • Tertiary qualification in Archaeology, Anthropology or related field with experience in Cultural Heritage would be highly regarded.
  • Experience in complex community relations management, including Aboriginal communities
  • Demonstrated experience operating at a senior level in stakeholder relations in a large, complex organisation preferably in the mining, resources or energy sector
  • Demonstrated experience in the engagement and consultation practices with Aboriginal people
  • Knowledge of Native Title and the Aboriginal Cultural Heritage Act 2021
