About the role:
We are looking for a Geoscience Manager to plan and execute Geotechnical and Geology work programs to support the Mine Design and Life on Mine Studies at Oyu Tolgoi. Reporting to the General Manager – Technical and Strategic Mine Planning, you will be accountable for:
- Planning and executing Geotechnical and Geology data collection programs
- Liaising with the site team and reviewing geotechnical data such as rock properties, in situ stress and validation of historical core information with face mapping data
- Providing ground support designs and execution strategies
- Managing Contractors using best practice project management of service providers using standard Rio Tinto work practices
- Collaborating with Oyu Tolgoi Mine Planning and Design Teams contribute to development of effective mine design and life of mine (LOM) schedules
- Reviewing the design and implementation of a robust and industry leading cave and mine stability monitoring system
- Developing best practice cave management guidelines to best balance the requirements for stability and cave growth with maximum resource recovery
- Ensuring robust geotechnical risk management systems are developed and implemented to manage geotechnical engineering related critical risks
- Ensuring compliance to the relevant discipline Rio Tinto Safety Standards
- Developing and contributing too, through international and in country relationships, industry leading geotechnical development programs for the Mongolian national work force
- Disseminating best practice through leadership, guidance and mentorship of the team, with a view to ensuring geoscience specialists are well-prepared for future roles
- Managing all HSEC related activities by anticipating current and future risks, and setting and monitoring objectives to ensure standards are met
What you will bring
- University graduate or post-graduate qualifications in Geotechnical Engineering, Geosciences or equivalent
- Extensive experience in underground geoscience leadership positions, at superintendent or above level
- Competent and comprehensive use of geotechnical and geology software and results interpretation
- Underground cave mining operations and geotechnical mine design and strategic planning experience would be well regarded
- Previous experience in a porphyry copper and gold mine with an understanding of block cave mining techniques and terminology will be highly regarded
- Excellent interpersonal, team building and collaborative skills with an inclusive, honest and respectful approach to stakeholder and team management
- Well-developed problem-solving capability combined with a forward-thinking mindset
- Exceptional communication skills to give clear recommendations and communicate at the right level
- Ability to work well in a team that has diverse technical expertise, drawing out the best in project solutions
- Willingness to integrate the collective expertise in the business and balance the technically optimal with the operationally viable through ongoing discussion with technical and operational SMEs and leaders
It would also be beneficial if you have:
- Membership of professional geotechnical, geological and mining societies such as Engineers Australia, AusIMM
- Chartered Professional recognition CP, RPEQ etc

Where you will be working
The Rio Tinto Copper group is a global organisation with operations and projects in the U.S. (Kennecott Utah Copper, "RTKC", and Resolution Copper Project), Mongolia (Oyu Tolgoi), Simandou (Guinea) and Western Australia (Winu Cu-Au project). The portfolio also includes interests in a non-managed joint venture in Chile, in addition to exploration & evaluation interests and other minor investments.
This role is based in Brisbane. We offer a flexible working arrangement with a balance of office-based and work from home. You will have the opportunity to travel on a periodic basis to Mongolia to visit the Oyu Tolgoi site.
