We are seeking an experienced Business Improvement Manager to work in Rio Tinto’s Global Process Ownership, Business Improvement & Value (BI&V) team. Reporting to the Senior Manager of BI&V, you will be responsible for working with Rio Tinto’s senior global process owners to simplify and de-bureaucratise Rio Tinto’s way of working. Driving the global ownership mindset was endorsed by the Rio Tinto Executive Committee in February 2022 and is seen as a foundational element to how we set Rio Tinto up to deliver its strategic objectives. This role provides a unique opportunity to deliver meaningful change to Rio Tinto’s operating model. You will have proven success working with senior stakeholders to implement new ways of working ensuring maximum productivity whilst reducing costs.

This role is a great opportunity for a motivated and dynamic leader to work with the business improvement team to identify, implement, and embed improvement initiatives or projects that will support the business’ full potential.

To succeed in this role, you will be expected to: 

  • Work with senior leaders across Rio Tinto to implement changes to their operating model; enabling accountability for end-to-end process outcomes
  • Identify inefficiencies in current processes and systems and provide innovative solutions to improve resulting in higher productivity and reduced costs
  • Identify and implement opportunities to improve practices, policies, procedures internationally to create efficiency and operational excellence
  • Engage with senior stakeholders across multiple functions to identify business improvement activities
  • Identify bottlenecks and opportunities for improvement projects to improve employee engagement and productivity
  • Assisting in the development and deployment of business improvement method and tools
  • Support compliance with standardised processes, systems, and tools
  • Apply disciplined governance and quality assurance across business improvement projects
  • Define and advise on improvement approaches for complex issues

About you

To be successful in this role, you will need:

  • Experience working in large complex organisations
  • The ability to build, influence and maintain key relationships with senior leaders
  • Change management, negotiation and strong communication skills
  • Experience working in an operations, finance or business improvement role
  • Business acumen coupled with proven problem-solving skills and experience
  • Excellent communication skills and experience dealing with all levels within an organisation
  • Strong analytical skills and experience in proactive strategic analysis
  • Demonstrated curiosity and drive for thinking differently
  • Strong business acumen
  • Ability to cultivate collaboration, autonomy, and creativity within the team
  • Bachelor’s or higher education in Finance, Engineering, or relevant commensurate experience
  • A deep curiosity about the business and an inclusive approach to problem-solving
  • Strong experience in coaching and change management; ability to bring others on the journey
  • Demonstrated achievements in identifying and implementing business & operational processes using improvement methodologies such as six sigma

Where you’ll be working

The Business & Technology Support FBP team reports through to the Group CFO and supports Safety, Technical & Projects, Strategy & Development and Central Functions including IS&T, Corporate Affairs, Finance and Human Resources. With a breadth of scope that covers exploration, project development and technical excellence, mergers & acquisition, business development through to closure; and all the functions that are necessary to run our business. You will be working closely with your direct manager in Reading and remotely with the rest of the FBP team (based in multiple locations with concentrations in Brisbane, Perth, Salt Lake City and Montreal).
