The Opportunity - Permanent, Full-Time Position

Join us in this newly created role of Manager Improvement – Health and Safety Culture which is responsible for managing the delivery of the South32 Safety Improvement program, ensuring project and effectiveness measures are met. You will provide leadership, expertise, and direction to generate value (social, environmental, and economic) now and into the future.

This role is suited to a driven, proactive, and hands-on improvement professional who will lead:

  • Design and manage the delivery of Health & Safety Culture Improvement initiatives at Group, Functions, and Operations
  • Evaluates H&S’s performance in relation to the internal and external environment
  • Provides support for the business to identify opportunities to improve H&S performance and deliver improvement initiatives through existing business processes,
  • Evaluate site practices, identify best practices, and facilitate deployment across the business

Reporting to the Vice President of Health & Safety Culture, key role responsibilities include, but aren’t limited to:

  • Design systems and processes to enable the identification and execution of Safety improvement initiatives through the South32 business planning approach – across functions and operations
  • Own the portfolio of strategic improvement projects across the health and safety disciplines that support the delivery of the South32 business plan/s and functional objectives
  • Influence the strategic direction of the business with respect to Health and Safety Culture to reduce long-term risk exposure, and drive continuous performance improvement
  • Co-create with Strategy and Reporting the company-wide goals and targets for Safety, including Short-Term Incentives for Remuneration
  • Support South32 reporting processes (internal and external) in relation to health and safety management activities and initiatives
  • Coordinate the preparation of the Annual Sustainability Report – Health & Safety Culture section
  • Monitor improvements in the technical field in the external environment and provide advice to South32 leadership on potential applications and reduction of Safety risk to the Group’s operations
  • Ensure the timely identification and management of business risks and opportunities and the development of an accurate risk profile for H&S Culture
  • Prepare accurate and timely risk and compliance reporting, including emerging trends to key stakeholders and provide inputs/ review for Group reporting
  • Implement and lead ongoing risk routines with TLT, risk owners to regularly review risks and controls
  • Support the regular review of the effectiveness of the risk management, governance, and assurance processes implemented in H&S Culture
  • Create an inclusive workplace with a strong culture of care and accountability

     About You 

  • Extensive industry experience in health and safety management
  • Highly collaborative, builds trust and respect by always acting with high ethical standards, objectivity, transparency, due care, and professionalism with multiple stakeholders
  • Risk management experience and understanding of the risk management framework
  • Effective report writing abilities include the ability to create reports for the Board
  • Focused with a willingness and passion to drive improvement and innovation
  • Demonstrated ability to drive cross-functional teams to deliver complex, organization-wide improvement projects including associated change management
  • Requires knowledge of key concepts, theories, and practices to establish a strong Health & safety culture and safety leadership
  • Ability to influence operational teams (including senior management) based on operational experience and subject matter knowledge
  • Demonstrated ability to develop and maintain sound working relationships (face-to-face and remote) with internal and external stakeholders including South32 senior executives
  • Excellent analytical skills (qualitative and quantitative)
  • Flexibility and the ability to adapt to changing business needs and circumstances
  • Well-developed communication, interpersonal, negotiation, and facilitation skills
  • Excellent skills in managing time, setting priorities, planning, and organizing
  • Track record in leading change initiatives in a diverse business setting

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent tertiary level qualification (Psychology / Organisational Development / Human Factors / Health and Safety / similar)
  • The ability or willingness to speak or learn Spanish and an understanding of the Spanish culture and history preferred
