We are currently looking for a Manager – Health & Safety to help us set up our newest, open pit mining project!

West Musgrave will be one of the world’s largest, lowest cost, lowest emissions copper-nickel projects.

Reporting to the Senior Manager – Health, Safety & Environment, you will take the lead and planning on health and safety to safely deliver the West Musgrave project through the Construction phases in support of OZ Minerals' growth strategy.

The primary purpose of this role is to lead, develop, promote, and report on all HSE matters and contribute to safety initiatives through a team-based approach.

About the Role 

The Manager – Health & Safety role will focus on ensuring the West Musgrave Project is safely delivered on time and on budget. Core deliverables include, but are not limited to:

  • Using initiative and influence to facilitate the design and implementation of the HST system from a risk-based perspective and ensure that contractors (who are the major number of personnel on site) systems comply.
  • Drive and lead a strong health and safety “We Care” focused culture.
  • Oversee management and delivery of the WeCare Limbic Safety program including contract management.
  • Establishing and implementing safe working practices and procedures.
  • Ensure all statutory and regulatory requirements in respect of mine planning activities are met.
  • Lead a high performing multi-disciplinary team to enable leading practice health and safety management performance.
  • Ensure required permits and licences are identified and obtained within the timeframe required by the project and mining schedule.
  • Oversee critical risk management, fatality prevention programs and health, safety, and risk strategy.
  • Oversee compliance to relevant Performance and Process Standards.
  • Oversee the implementation and management of the Mine Safety Management System and supporting processes and tools for incident management (including investigations, reporting and action follow-up; investigation training).
  • Oversee the maintenance and improvement of the site Mine Safety Management System.
  • Lead relationship with key Stakeholders (including regulators and contract partners).
  • Cost management of the function.
  • Provide specialist SME advice and guidance to the site project delivery and operational readiness teams to improve health, safety, and environment performance.
  • Lead health and safety innovation to provide leading practice performance.
  • Lead accurate, professional, and timely delivery of internal and external health, safety and risk reporting.
  • Regularly review and update relevant plans and procedures to manage identified risks and meet OZ Minerals Health, Safety and Risk Standards.
  • Effectively ensure plans and procedures are adequately communicated and stakeholders are engaged to improve health, safety, risk and environment outcomes and performance.
  • Implement and oversee appropriate site critical risk and control verification system and processes.
  • Monthly internal and external WHS statistical and trend analysis reporting.

About You

Above all, you are a self-starter with the ability to build rapport with teammates, contractors, and suppliers to deliver optimal outcomes along with the following:

  • Extensive knowledge of the OHS&W legislation and industry practice, and standards as it applies across the project.
  • Extensive experience working in Health and Safety
  • Experience in negotiation of agreements with regulatory authorities and community stakeholders.
  • Extensive experience working on remote FIFO area mining projects.
  • Extensive knowledge of safety and incident management systems within the mining industry
  • Risk management and emergency and medical services management experience
  • Strong understanding of Western Australian Work Health and Safety legislation
  • Understanding of AIIMS-ICS and site safety management systems.
  • Budgeting, Cost Control, Project & Contract Management
  • Strong leadership and influential team building skills
  • Qualifications in Work, Health, and Safety
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
