About WAIO
Western Australia Iron Ore (WAIO) is an integrated system of four processing hubs and five mines, connected by more than 1,000 kilometres of rail infrastructure and port facilities in the Pilbara region of northern Western Australia. Our iron ore business includes integrated iron ore mines, rail, and port operations in the Pilbara region of Western Australia: South Flank, Jimblebar, Newman Operations, Port Hedland Ports, Yandi, Mining Area C.
About the Role
We are seeking two talented Business Improvement Managers; one each for Rail and Jimblebar. Reporting to the General Manager, this position supports the continued maturity of the BHP Operating System (BOS) and delivery of the sites continuous improvement initiatives. It is a role that both leverages your influencing skills and rewards your networking and collaboration efforts across the broader business.
BOS is a way of leading and working that makes improvement part of what we do every day and focuses on Serving Our Customers, Pursuing Operation Perfection and Empowering Our People, taking inspiration from Lean Management.
Key Accountabilities
- Leverage our application of BOS Principles and Practices to enable the delivery of Rail and Jimblebar’s Business Plan priorities; across all pillars of performance
- Coach the General Manager and site leadership teams to reinforce and sustain the BHP Operating System including coaching and developing the required mindsets and behaviours in our leaders and front-line teams
- Support the site leadership team in the delivery of the annual Integrated Operation Plan (IOP) through its development, shared ownership, and delivery of improvement initiatives
- Lead the site Improvement team to deliver value through delivery of site wide initiatives, supporting delivery of front-line improvement and the ongoing development of standardised work across the site value streams
- Management of the BOS dojo/learning centre to support the ongoing development and maturity of capability across site leaders and teams
- Coordinate the planning, preparation, and action planning for the BOS Operational Excellence Index (OEI) assessment processes including supporting leader Role Confirmations, self-assessment processes and formal BHP OEI assessments
About You
We have a strong focus on finding individuals with the right values, leadership capability, and communication skills. Your interpersonal skills will foster strong working relationships within the Jimblebar and Rail leadership teams as well as across the WAIO supply chain more broadly.
In addition, we desire:
- Experience in business improvement or operational leadership roles
- Exposure to Rail Heavy Haul Operations, Transport and Logistics or Rail Passenger Networks would be ideal for the Rail Improvement Manager role.
- Exposure to Mining or Processing environments would be ideal for the Jimblebar Improvement Manager role.
- However for both locations experience in other industries that utilise an operating system founded on lean principles would also be highly regarded (e.g. manufacturing, health, finance, logistics, etc.).
- A solid understanding of continuous improvement methodologies and success in managing organisational change
- The ability to establish credibility as a trusted advisor through your strong improvement, leadership, coaching and communication skills
- Comfort with ambiguity, complexity and some experience delivering outcomes in a matrix environment again leveraging your sound collaboration, engagement, influence and coaching skills
- A fundamental belief in the value of diversity of thought as this role will leverage your ability to build and get the best from a diverse and inclusive team culture
About our Locations
Jimblebar
At Jimblebar, we are a people focussed and friendly site where a culture of inclusivity, fun and safety is our most important priority. Your role will be site based on a fly-in, fly-out roster from Perth. We have outstanding facilities at the modern FIFO village of Warrawandu which include a fully equipped gym, swimming pool, golf driving nets, outdoor cinema, netted cricket pitch, tennis and basketball court; beach volleyball court, games room and TV lounge. All rooms at the village have access to 4G wireless internet, ensuite bathroom, television, refrigerator, and air-conditioning.
Jimblebar is an open-cut iron ore mine approximately 40km east of Newman in the Pilbara region of Western Australia. We are a site with a rich history of innovation and improvement; we ran BHP’s first fully autonomous haul truck fleet and are often a trial site for new technologies. Our workforce is full of ideas on how to improve their work and are enabled to do so via the maturity of how we apply the BHP Operating System.
At Jimblebar we take pride in being part of an inclusive and high performing operation. Each year, the Jimblebar mine produces up to 70M tonnes of high grade product, and in FY2021, we achieved record production through our processing infrastructure. Our future sees Jimblebar’s value within the Supply Chain increase with nameplate OFR production and in later years of our plan the installation of a beneficiation plant. Pt Hedland
Port Hedland is a vibrant coastal town and is home to our port and rail operations and is the largest regional centre in North West Australia. The 20,000-strong population enjoys well-established education services, entertainment, shopping and medical facilities.
The excellent sporting and leisure facilities include; a new aquatic centre, sports stadium and water play park. Its beaches and mangroves are home to an abundance of fish and other wildlife. Within driving distance are the spectacular Broome, Karratha and Karijini National Park.
In a residential position, you will be provided with subsidised rental accommodation in addition to power and water subsidies. If you do chose to FIFO from Perth your commute will be complimented by excellent camp facilities, food and transport options.
