We are building a team with experience across the mining value chain, from exploration and resource characterisation to mining, processing and tailings and water treatment. While experience in these areas is a prerequisite, we are particularly looking for people who can reimagine the mining value chain, challenging the status quo and constantly asking “what if?” Within this team we aim to future-proof the mining industry through leveraging and de-risking emerging technologies to solve for known Asset challenges, enabling us deliver value today as we ambitiously reimage the mining operating model of tomorrow, positioning BHP as a leader in mining innovation.
About the Team
The Innovation is pursuing an operating model designed to increase the scale, velocity and effectiveness of BHP’s innovation efforts to Think & Act Differently. The team has been configured to focus on the innovation value chain, with groups of team members focused on:
- The external ecosystem and our engagement with it to identify new partners for us to work with and new ideas to test.
- Product development to rapidly test and mature a portfolio of ideas into robust and scalable solutions which could make a big difference to our current business and tomorrow’s resources.
- Innovation delivery, to deeply connect our innovation efforts with the needs of our customers in each operating Region, accelerating the deployment of successful new solutions.
We are focused on reimagining the mining value chain to deliver the critical minerals the world needs to facilitate the energy transition, while delivering value today to our existing Assets and operations.
About the Role
We are currently recruiting Innovation Execution Manager with expertise in agile technology development, robust technology derisking, and versatile technology portfolio management. As one of the Managers of Product Development, your purpose is to ensure that the Product Development team is growing a diverse portfolio of innovation initiatives, stretching the innovation envelope while ensuring deployment of near-term innovation and fully leveraging the combined team capabilities to maximize its impact. Reporting to Head of Innovation, Product Development, your key delivery includes:
- Ensuring a cohesive portfolio of innovation opportunities across the Product Development team, ensuring appropriate balance in technology maturity, value chain areas, and domains.
- Growing the portfolio exploring beyond the current focus areas, emphasizing on multi-disciplinary, cross-domain opportunities, as well as emerging technology areas.
- Adopting a system thinking lens to identify opportunities to maximise synergies and coordinate initiatives such that these may be configured to achieve transformational innovation.
- Supporting the other product area Managers with staffing and prioritization to accelerate the progression of their initiatives.
- Stewarding the innovation process by embedding innovative thinking and agile technology development in the way we work, by capturing and implementing best practices across the Innovation team and beyond, and by promoting a collaborative innovation environment.
- Leading agile technical teams to provide the necessary guidance to test and progress new initiatives.
- Developing derisking strategies leveraging analytical and physical approaches to mature initiatives.
- Developing technology and product roadmaps informed by the innovation strategy.
- Defining the product vision, business case, value proposition and use cases for both customer-centric and moon-shot initiatives, testing and refining these with internal and external stakeholders.
- Developing detailed technology/product development plans to be executed across each stage of the innovation process, ensuring internal and external collaborators are clear on the steps required to progress initiatives.
- Providing input into the required change initiatives in order to support effective piloting and implementation of initiatives.
- Providing subject matter expertise to the Innovation Ecosystem sub-team as input into partner prioritisation, selection and scoping of work.
- Partnering with Innovation Delivery to ensure initiatives are operationally ready before implementation with customers.
- Owning relationships with partners and vendors from a Product Development lens, supporting the Ecosystem sub-team in performance management.
About You
As a successful candidate you will possess the following:
- Experience managing technology and product development processes, including the ability to develop a multi-generational product roadmap for implementation and determine minimum viable features.
- A relevant Graduate degree
- Ability to overcome past failed product initiatives, applying the lessons learnt in following product development opportunities.
- A deep understanding of the resources sector, with experience working in a mining organisation.
- In-depth knowledge or experience in adopting Agile processes and principles, and the scientific approach of lean start-up methodologies to shorten product development timelines.
- Proven ability to prioritise products and initiatives against numerous variables and priorities to ensure a balanced portfolio.
- Relevant project management experience, particularly in overseeing the coordination of testing and pilots across diverse teams.
- Proven ability to develop and oversee the implementation of product roadmaps.
- Proven ability to build and drive relationships and work collaboratively within diverse teams, particularly with technical stakeholders.
- Deep subject matter expertise, with strong knowledge of broader market dynamics within mining and BHP’s unique operating environment.

There is flexibility for this role to be base in our Australia corporate offices in Brisbane, Perth or Adelaide.
