About the Role

The Manager Media, Australia and Asia is responsible for enhancing and protecting BHP’s corporate reputation through effective media engagement in Australia and Asia. In this role you will develop and execute media engagement plans to support the Company’s operations and Charter Values, implement the global media strategy in Australia and Asia, and manage media engagement in Australia on behalf of BHP. 

Reporting to the Head of Global Media and Digital, in this role you will be responsible for the following:  

  • Managing day to day media enquiries from national and international journalists based across print, broadcast and online, building effective working relationships.
  • Managing the media team, providing support to and coordinate responses/programs in line with the Global Communications Strategy.
  • Providing advice to management, business leaders and wider external affairs team on media engagement strategies to effectively manage and execute operational announcements, decisions and issues. 
  • Implementing media plans, events and initiatives to enhance BHP’s image and reputation, consistent with the Global Media Plan, with a focus on Australia and Asia.
  • Supporting media planning for financial calendar, operational reviews and AGMs.
  • Ensuring effective liaison with the media in Australia, in a way that presents BHP’s position accurately and positively.
  • Managing the preparation and release of media statements and supporting communications materials in a manner consistent with stock exchange rules, legal and reputational requirements.
  • Acting as Company spokesperson as required.
  • Preparing media materials to support management as required in national debates important to the company and consistent with the narrative, brand, EA priorities and advocacy agenda.
  • Monitoring media coverage, informing management of relevant issues/coverage and recommending relevant responses.
  • Providing strategic advice to the Executive Leadership Team and Minerals Australia Leadership (including leveraging speaking opportunities, media engagement and business announcements).
  • Providing strategic input into the global media team to support BHP’s media coverage is consistent and accurate across the globe
  • Working with Minerals Australia Corporate Affairs, Investor Relations, communications and Government Relations to ensure the company’s position and reputation is presented appropriately.
  • Manage, support and develop a team of dedicated, highly skilled media professionals in Australia and Asia.  

Given the seniority, complexity and nature of the role, there is a requirement to be available to the media outside normal business hours.

About You

As a successful candidate you will possess the following:

  • Experience working in media, investor relations as well as experience in the corporate sector.
  • Strong knowledge of media, digital and relationships.
  • Relevant Tertiary qualifications.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strategic thinker with the ability to ‘work through’ issues and appropriate responses
  • Issues management skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate with stakeholders.
  • Experience in stakeholder management and communications delivery.
  • Experience in leading and developing a team.

Location

Melbourne base is preferred, however there is also flexibility to be base at our corporate offices in Brisbane, Perth or Adelaide.
