About the Role

Reporting to the General Manager, this is a senior leadership opportunity where your voice, experience, and values will truly shape outcomes.

You will lead a large, diverse group of people and create an environment where safety, collaboration, and performance go hand in hand. This role is ideal for a leader who gets satisfaction from developing others, improving systems, and making a lasting impact on both people and operations.

Your key responsibilities will include:

  • Providing clear, inclusive strategic leadership to department teams, ensuring safety, productivity, and cost objectives are achieved consistently.
  • Leading a workforce of approximately 500+ people, including superintendents, OCEs, supervisors, and operators, with a strong focus on capability building and engagement.
  • Setting and continuously improving operational standards and goals, creating clarity and alignment across the department.
  • Acting as the site risk owner for vehicle incidents and explosives detonation, ensuring robust controls and a strong safety culture.
  • Developing and managing the department’s budget, with regular financial reviews and transparent communication with your leadership team.
  • Identifying and implementing productivity and efficiency improvements that support sustainable performance.
  • Driving effective risk management practices aligned with the site Safety and Health Management System (SHMS).
  • Spending time in the field, leading by example through visible safety leadership and coaching conversations.
  • Applying the BHP risk framework, including Risk Evaluation, Critical Control Verification (CCV), and Control Effectiveness Testing (CET).
  • Leading and reviewing ICAM and 5-Why investigations for significant events and High Potential Incidents (HPIs) with a learning‑focused approach.
  • Reviewing and approving mine plans, ensuring safety, operational, and budget alignment.
  • Championing innovation, continuous improvement, and smarter ways of working.
  • Developing meaningful KPIs, supporting performance conversations, and enabling your leaders to succeed.
  • Embedding BHP Operating System (BOS) routines to create consistency, clarity, and operational excellence

About You

You are an empathetic, confident leader who values people as much as performance. You lead with integrity, communicate clearly, and build trust through your actions. You thrive in complex environments and enjoy making things better — for your team and the operation.

You will bring:

  • Strong, people‑focused leadership experience with a genuine passion for developing and mentoring diverse teams.
  • A deep personal commitment to safety, wellbeing, and psychological safety.
  • Well‑developed analytical and problem‑solving skills, with a continuous improvement mindset.
  • Excellent communication skills and the ability to influence and collaborate across all levels of an organisation.
  • Adaptability and resilience, with the confidence to lead through change.
  • Experience managing operational budgets and delivering results responsibly and sustainably.
  • Surface Mine Manager (Coal) Certificate of Competency (or commitment to obtain, in line with RSHQ transitional requirements).
  • Site Senior Executive (SSE) Notice is desirable, or a demonstrated commitment to obtaining it
