  • Great opportunity to work for a global mining company that works to leave a lasting, positive legacy
  • Join a global network and diverse team where people are encouraged to offer unique perspectives and build knowledge and connections
  • Permanent Role based in Brisbane or Gladstone
  • 3 New Roles:
    • Workstream Project Manager – Electric Boilers
    • Workstream Project Manager – Hydrogen Calcination
    • Workstream Project Manager – Double Digestion

About the roles

Rio Tinto has recently announced an ambitious strategy to grow our business and decarbonise our assets. Our greenhouse gas Scope 1 & 2 emissions reduction targets are 15% by 2025, 50% by 2030 and net zero by 2050.

RTA Pacific Operations (PacOps) is committed to reducing Carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions from the alumina refineries located in Gladstone. There are three large ‘Tier 1’ project workstreams that have been identified to rapidly advance carbon reduction at Yarwun and Queensland Alumina Limited (QAL) where Rio Tinto holds an 80% interest. These projects are to Electrify the coal fired boilers (CFBs) at Yarwun and QAL using renewable energy, increase process efficiencies to reduce the capital cost of electrification by converting QAL’s high-temperature digestion units to a ‘double digestion’ configuration and use Hydrogen (H2) in the high temperature process of alumina calcination.

To help us with this challenge, we are looking for three Workstream Project Managers for Rio Tinto’s newly established Decarbonisation function within PacOps to lead the studies and execution work of these streams of work.

Reporting to the General Manager Gladstone Refinery Decarbonisation your responsibilities will include;

    • Manage resources to deliver project scope safely, on time and within budget
    • Monitor, manage and report all relevant project performance indicators to meet business requirements
  • Maintain relationships with key stakeholders to drive a culture of collaboration, participation and improvement in project delivery
  • Ensure compliance with the Project Management Framework and other project governance processes
  • Recruit a team of technical experts, external consultants, and a project support team to deliver the workstream packages

About Rio Tinto

Every idea, every innovation, every little thing the world calls ‘progress’ begins with

a first step, and someone willing to take it: explorers, inventors, entrepreneurs. Pioneers.

For nearly 150 years, Rio Tinto has been a company of pioneers – generations of people spanning the globe, all with the grit and vision to produce materials essential to human progress.

Our iron ore has shaped skylines from Shanghai to Sydney. Our aluminium – the world’s first to be certified “responsible” – helps planes fly and makes cars lighter. Our copper helps wind turbines power cities and our boron helps feed the world, and explore the universe. Our diamonds help us celebrate the best parts of life.

Where you will be working

Rio Tinto is a global leader in aluminium, one of the world’s most widely used metals.

Active in the sector for more than 110 years, today we operate large-scale, high-quality bauxite mines and alumina refineries, and have the world’s most modern and competitive aluminium smelter portfolio.

Our Pacific Operations sites are located along the east coast of Australia, at the tip of the Northern Territory and in New Zealand’s south. With more than 6,000 employees, we operate a full value chain approach—mining, refining and smelting. Our portfolio includes four bauxite mines, two refineries, four smelters and one power station, and is supported by technical experts located in our Brisbane hub, including a fully operational Operations Centre for our bauxite mines.
