The Rio Tinto Iron Ore Rail Division is at the core of delivering our business objectives, which include to reliably and safely deliver iron ore to the Ports from 17 mining operations across 1,900km of captive rail network. Our long-term vision is to become a safe, reliable, integrated, cost efficient and net zero emissions transporter of iron ore. 

We are looking for a Manager Rail Strategy to lead the strategy and delivery of transformational projects across the rail network. In particular, this role leads the railway’s effort to achieve net zero emissions and develop digital systems to optimise the maintenance and operation of the network.

Reporting to the General Manager Rail Engineering & Strategy and working in a collaborative community within the Rail Strategy department, you will:

  • Lead experienced and knowledgeable subject matter experts within the Iron Ore Rail Strategy team whose expertise spans across Productivity Optimisation, Sustainability, Strategy Delivery, Physical Assets, People & Change, Intelligent Systems and Partnerships
  • Deliver a complex program of work
  • Provide long term strategies and plans with a clear line of sight from the overall business objectives building capacity, productivity and improvement
  • Implement core activities, practices and procedures and follow-ups to develop safety culture

  • Engineering degree (desirable) or relevant experience in asset-intensive industry, leading technical teams

Where you’ll be working

We operate 220 locomotives on more than 1,900 kilometres of track in the Pilbara, transporting ore from 17 mines to four port terminals. The average return distance of these trains is about 800 kilometres with the average journey cycle, including loading and dumping, taking approximately 40 hours.

Our network is the largest privately owned and operated heavy haul rail system in Australia, and as we focus on the future, our vision is to become the greatest heavy haul railway in the world.
