Position: Manufacturing Engineering Manager (WAE)

Location: Perth

Work Type: Permanent Full Time (Mon to Fri)

Fortescue/WAE are presently seeking expressions of interest for an experienced Manufacturing Engineering Manager to help set up an exciting new manufacturing department in Australia. This role will be part of the Australia based management team responsible for establishing their respective team, processes, and metrics with close liaison with the UK departments to ensure a consistent application globally. Ensuring operational targets are established and maintained to customer, quality, cost and timing requirements. To set and implement departmental strategies and initiatives to support the global and local company’s objectives and targets, and ultimately avoid CO2 emissions over 3 million tonnes per annum.

Job role:

  • Responsible for the manufacturing engineering or delivery during quality maturation, launch ramp and serial production phases, developing safe and efficient operations on a daily basis, whilst leading and developing continuous improvement culture.
  • Support the establishment and implement of site protocols for HSE, IT and security across all WAE facilities in line with legislative requirements and company requirements set by WAE strategic directives and/or Fortescue Future Industries
  • Support the future need for remanufacturing and repurposing activities (possibly from a secondary location) including liaison with key stakeholders across the value chain.
  • Assist with the management and resolution of customer, internal and supplier quality and/or safety concerns and improvement activities.
  • Identify and implement manufacturing best practice and strive for operational efficiency and associated improvements.
  • Actively manage talent, with coaching, performance appraisals and annual reviews and ensure performance is measure against quality, cost and time deliverables
  • Promote the use of cross-functional team approach between engineering, purchasing, manufacturing and quality functions in project management.
  • Coordinate with both the UK based departments, global programme teams and/or the Australia based Operations team, to ensure that sanctioned communications to all stakeholders have been properly prepared and reviewed.
  • Undertake other duties as may be required to achieve the Company’s objectives, commensurate with the grading of the post. Including but not limited to representing and growing the WAE brand as part of the WAE Australia management team based in-country.

You will have:

  • Technical and/or Commercial education to degree level, with post graduate studies highly desirable.
  • Experience (+10 years) gained from holding a similar position within another high value brand organisation. Sectors including Mining and Resource, Automotive and/or Aerospace.
  • Other desirable experiences include operation in;
    • a start-up environment (implementing systems, processes and tools)
    • within Western Australia and Asia-Pacific region
    • and/or high-voltage applications and requirements.
  • Knowledge of low / mid volume automation tools and techniques with practical hands-on manufacturing experience in related industry – likely to be automotive, but complimented by defence / aerospace sectors.
  • Strong practical problem-solving skills with the knowledge and experience to mentor others in the use of disciplined problem-solving tools and techniques such as 8D, FMEA, Control Plans, SOP’s
  • Knowledge of lean methods (5S, Lean Six Sigma, Kaizen), delivery methods APQP/PPAP, project management approaches, and failure investigation techniques (8D, Cause and Effect Analysis)
  • Demonstrated leadership skills displaying interpersonal empathy and assertive direction, with ability to effectively collaborate with a wide range of internal and external stakeholders.
  • Excellent prioritising, organisation, interpersonal, communication and analytical skills 
  • Positive and constructive character and personality is essential with a strong drive to succeed.
