About the role
We are looking for a Marine Assurance Manager - East Coast to assist the Rio Tinto Portfolio Assurance Manager in implementing safety procedures, standards and processes across both companies owned vessels, as well as over the broader chartered fleet of vessels calling east coast of Australia including New Zealand.
Reporting to the Portfolio Assurance Manager, this role is a great opportunity for the incumbent to manage Rio Tinto’s freight exposure in the various shipping markets taking charge of the below accountabilities:
Ensure a smooth and cost-efficient operation of vessels through the ports as minimizing total time in port and always delivering on customer expectations. This would include but not be limited to supervising and driving the following (60%):
Develop allocation and shipment scheduling plans for both export and inbound non-bulk based on short term sales plan, raw materials demand, market strategy and negotiated carrier portfolio.
Produce analysis and recommendations for allocation of logistics capacity within the sales plan, optimising logistics portfolio and taking into consideration sales and strategic guidelines for input in the Sales & Operational Planning process (S&OP).
Follow up on execution against plan, working with S&OP, Sales, Customer Service, Procurement and Logistics Operations, initiate and track corrective actions as required.
Develop carrier evaluation methodology and guidelines, analyse their performance and implement actions to treat deviations such as unused allocations or failure to provide agreed capacity.
Facilitate alignment between Sales, S&OP, Procurement and Logistics in relation to different aspects of allocation and scheduling of shipping capacity to maximize results and recognition of the value creation to our customers.
Build and maintain strong effective carrier relationships collaborating with Sourcing & Strategy team on carrier selections, negotiation, contracts and performance management, providing bid support to relevant stakeholders on freight rates, consolidation opportunities, network constraints and carrier onboarding.
Act as key focal point for allocation and shipment scheduling related issues internally and with carriers externally.
Lead implementation of innovative logistics solutions and digital projects ensuring both internal and external customers’ needs are met within costs and timeframes and perform super-user role for connected planning and optimisation systems.
Support Logistics Operations in performance metrics analytics, identify and lead continuous business improvement opportunities including but not limited to the current planning process to achieve best-in-class performance.
Implementation and reinforcement of company safety standards on owned and chartered fleet (10%):
Continue with the implementation of CRM on Company owned vessels.
Understand and apply proactively, the intent and focus of Rio Tinto standards on company owned and charted vessels.
Adhere to RT Marine’s policies and systems requirements at all times.
Constantly demonstrate the company values on site and when travelling to / from site.
Keep Rio Tinto’s vision and values at the forefront of all decision making.
Use appropriate methods to develop, establish and maintain a position of confidence amongst colleagues as a reliable, resourceful and competent team member adding value to marine based decisions.
Project work as required (10%):
Undertake key operations and project work as required.
Provide Marine Project support to our customers on site.
Evaluation of key suppliers covering port agency, port authorities, pilots, RT Port Operations, AMSA, etc.
Participate in and contribute to various meetings and lead where necessary in order to identify and discuss best practice with all stakeholders.
Engagement with the logistics team when specialist cargoes are arriving in port to ensure safe and efficient handling.
Deliver and maintain high standards of customer service to the business units demonstrated by customer feedback (10%):
Provide strategic advice on shipping operational matters, ensuring timely referral to the greater RTM team as the local RTIO port operations teams.
Incident management and reporting (10%):
Manage and report on incidents in close cooperation with colleagues and major stakeholders.as a part of the broader Business resilience organizational structure.
Ability to be the first on scene investigator when an incident has happened requiring investigation.
Ensure compliance to standards policies and procedures including:
Cooperate with and support the Group executive in the implementation of compliance systems.
Personally comply and being seen to comply with operational procedures.
Comply with the law, The way we work and other Rio Tinto policies and standards.
Encourage employees and contractors to report compliance incidents.
Identify, document, manage and communicate compliance risks in their operations.
Actively encourage, mentor, coach and supervise employees and contractors to promote integrity and compliant behaviour.
Assess whether adequate resources are available to employees and contractors to facilitate compliant behaviour (budget, training facilities, tools, reference materials, access to Speak-OUT systems, access to specialist staff, investigations, etc.) and, where this is not the case, seeking further resources
What you will need for the role
To succeed in this role, you will have:
College/University Education: Logistics or Maritime Studies preferred but not essential.
Licenses/Certifications: Sea going certification/experience - (Master Mariner).
Sea going experience - (Master Mariner).
Computer Literate/ general understanding of Excel/Word/e-mail and good communication skills both written and verbal. Blue MSIC card essential, Driver’s license essential.
Demonstrates strategic planning and organizational ability within allotted time frames
