Mechanical Design Engineer
Work Location: Dawson Rd., Perth Airport
Roster: Monday to Friday
Key accountabilities will include:
- Produce project intent, design change control, and testing validation documentation in compliance with ISO9001 standards for your projects
- Produce and maintain technical and engineering drawings using 3D CAD (Inventor experience desirable)
- Perform extensive calculations and CFD analysis to analyse three phase flow phenomena and thermal properties in order to improve and qualify designs
- Lead the design on multiple mechanical projects in line with the engineering specifications developed as part of an integrated engineering team
- Uses finite element analysis (FEA) and computational fluid dynamics (CFD) to support design and optimization work
- Designs and operates (or outsources) laboratory experiments to inform and validate FEA and CFD models
- Build and maintain tools for data analysis
- Manage and coordinate designs with the relevant engineering teams to support discrete projects from inception to prototyping and testing
- Work cohesively with the design and engineering team to ensure designs are in line with requirements
- Develop smart designs for fabrication and automated assembly
- Develop scope documents when external engineering or fabrication works are required
- Support the assembly and testing of your designs in a shop prototype testing setting
- Management of drawings via Vault as well as tracking prototype costs via a detailed BOM liaising with materials and supply chain experts as required
Qualifications and skills required:
- BSc/MS: 5+ years of industry experience OR PhD: 0-3 years of experience in Mechanical, Aerospace Engineering, Physics, or related
- Autodesk Inventor experience desirable
- At least 5+ years of experience in mechanical design, prototyping and manufacturing
- At least 5+ years experience in CFD essential (Openfoam / Ansys desirable)
- Demonstrated knowledge of mechanical engineering design principles and practices - Form, fit, tolerance stack analysis, GD&T, drafting standards, FEA, CFD, design for assembly, design for manufacturing, etc.
- Experience with CAM software, rapid prototyping, Python, heat exchangers / fuel cells an asset
- Demonstrated experience using 3D design software for creating detailed designs in multi part assemblies as well as preparation of fabrication drawings
- Self-motivated self-starter who has the ability to work in a fast-paced environment when provided with high level targets and design parameters
- Excellent first principles understanding of heat transfer, fluid mechanics, and thermodynamics with relevant experience
- Experience in developing numerical models and experimental characterization of thermal/fluid systems and heat exchangers
- An innovative but methodical thinker who is outcome driven and adaptable to changing scopes
