ABOUT OUR PERTH OFFICE

South32’s corporate office is based in the heart of Perth’s CBD. The corporate office houses key functions including HR, Finance, External Affairs, Sustainability Strategy, Corporate Development, Investor Relations, Group Risk, Legal and Technical. Our office is conveniently located a 5-minute walk from the Perth Underground Train Station.

ABOUT THE ROLE 

This is a permanent full-time position based in our Perth offices. We understand and value the benefits of flexibility and operate a hybrid work model (in the office and from home).

The role of Mechanical Engineer will collaborate with internal engineers and external partners to bring projects to life that align with business needs. Your focus will be on crafting designs that meet stakeholder expectations for our Major Projects pipeline. You'll incorporate Safety in Design principles throughout the project lifecycle, from conception to completion, ensuring safe and efficient outcomes. As a key liaison, you'll facilitate communication between various teams, vendors, and contractors. Your expertise will guide projects through different stages, ensuring smooth transitions and effective design delivery to end users.

Reporting to the Lead - Mechanical Engineer, key responsibilities include: 

  • Support engineering and design for each phase for major projects, collaborating with a broad variety of project stakeholders and external partners to deliver successful solutions through ESP designs primarily
  • Provide first line of assurance, technical review and approval of design deliverables, ensuring compliance with standards and project requirements
  • Support safety in design activities, including risk assessments and reviews, while addressing operational and maintenance impacts
  • Contribute to construction, commissioning, and operational readiness processes, with potential for site-based assignments and travel

ABOUT YOU 

  • Mechanical Engineer with a good understanding in processing plant equipment.
  • Exposure to mechanical engineering software package for technical review: examples such as Pipe Stress Analysis (CAEPipe or similar), Fluid Flow 3 (or similar), FEA package modelling (Autodesk inventor or similar), Structural analysis (Strand 7 or similar), 2D and 3D drafting/modelling (AutoCAD and Navisworks, or similar).
  • An understanding of AS/NZS and international standards, with experience in implementing engineering change management
  • Minimum 5 years' industry experience in capital/maintenance projects, including document development and multidisciplinary team collaboration.
  • Display well-developed oral and written communication abilities, adept at conveying information clearly and professionally

Qualifications for this position are: 

  • Degree in Mechanical Engineering or related discipline.
  • Preferably registered, eligible for or working towards engineering registration/chartered status
