Work Location: Fortescue Centre, East Perth. Fortescue’s Perth office is located on the traditional lands of the Whadjuk people.

Roster: Monday to Friday

At Fortescue we are in the process of transforming our energy assets to achieve our climate change targets of zero emissions by 2030. This is a great opportunity for an experienced Mechanical Engineer to join an energetic and collaborative team where you will be a key member of the energy operations team and have exposure to a diverse range of engineering matters ensuring the sustainability of our operations.

Fortescue are looking for a mechanical engineer with experience in power generation systems including gas turbine and reciprocating engines. In this role you will provide technical leadership and knowledge in the mechanical operation and control of Fortescue's power generation assets including the integration of other renewable power sources.

This is a Perth based role reporting to the Energy Operations Senior Mechanical Engineer, however does require flexibility to travel to site when required (approximately once per month for 3-4 days). It is an excellent and varied opportunity to provide specialist technical services to enable the energy operations team to reliably maintain and operate Fortescue's growing energy asset portfolio across the Pilbara. The role demands a strong focus on teamwork to achieve required outcomes and the promotion of high engineering standards.

Key accountabilities will include:

  • Embracing Fortescues values and a commitment to zero harm and environmental responsibility.
  • Providing specialist engineering solutions across a wide range of asset and life cycle issues and ensure technical asset integrity.
  • Managing small through to large-scale engineering investigations including the completion of all aspects of the engineering design. These would cover new assets, major maintenance activities, failure investigations, reliability reviews and rectification, and upgrade works.
  • Oversee installation, operation, maintenance, and repair to ensure that generating units and equipment are installed and functioning according to specifications.
  • Responding to technical queries from the site operations team relating to the safe operation of each generating unit.
  • Engineering leadership and support to the operations groups who are accountable for the delivery of the site-specific maintenance plans.
  • Identify, assess and manage engineering risks.
  • Maintaining clear communication with key stakeholders.
  • Understanding and ensuring assets comply with technical, regulatory and governance requirements.

Qualifications and skills required:

  • A strong safety focus.
  • A strong technical aptitude with the ability to quickly analyse and solve problems.
  • Excellent interpersonal and stakeholder engagement skills.
  • Practical experience in the power generation sector, specifically with gas turbines, gas engines, associated auxiliary systems and general power station plant.
  • Experience in the development and delivery of small capex projects.
  • Strategic understanding of operation and maintenance of power stations.
  • Tertiary qualification in a related discipline such as mechanical engineering.
