The maintenance team’s role is to support the day to day operations in a manner that focuses on safety, environment, quality and continual improvement. You will be working a 9 day roster known as “Roster 9” which means you'll have every 2nd Friday as an RDO.

Reporting to the Crew Leader Carbon Bake Maintenance, this Mechanical Fitter position will;

  • Play an important role in providing breakdown support to the Defect Elimination team within our Carbon Department.
  • Preventative Maintenance and service repair on a variety of equipment including overhead cranes, conveyors, pushers and dust extractors. Also Cylinders, Valves and crushers.
  • Work alongside mechanical and electrical tradesmen and apprentices, in a collaborative manner.
  • Promote a safe, healthy, cooperative, and productive work environment by observing all company safety and environment policies and procedures and encouraging others to do so.
  • Contribute positively to safety meetings & pre-starts.

This position is also a pathway for those with previous leadership skills, or wishing to step up within their career. We are looking to develop the right person to fulfill a 2nd in Charge Position within the team, to help guide and direct the team and lead by example.

What you will bring

To be successfully considered for this role, you will have:

  • A commitment to the safety of yourself and your team
  • A Mechanical Fitter and Turner Trade (mandatory)
  • A valid driver’s license
  • Relevant experience in heavy industrial environment
  • Experience working on hydraulics and automated machinery
  • A demonstrated commitment to safety
  • Demonstrated ability to function effectively as part of a team and to autonomously manage your workload
  • Good computer skills including the use of SAP would be desirable.
  • High level of mechanical diagnostic/trouble shooting skill

Where you’ll be working

Boyne Smelters Limited is Australia’s second largest aluminium smelter with a 1,000-person strong workforce. Located approximately 20km south east of Gladstone at Boyne Island on the Central Queensland coast, BSL produces around 500,000 tonnes of aluminium per annum.

Activities at BSL include manufacturing carbon anodes in the carbon plant, aluminium production (smelting) in reduction lines, and casting of molten material into aluminium products ready to ship. The smelter is connected via a conveyor belt to the Queensland Alumina Limited refinery for the supply of alumina.
