The Opportunity
We are looking for a Metallurgist to provide technical support and leadership for operations and maintenance staff, assisting in improving plant availability and performance in order to maximise plant throughput whilst minimising the associated costs. Optimisation and improvement of the process plant will be a key role.
This role is a great opportunity for Process Engineers/Metallurgists of any experience level interested in taking their career to the next level at Rio Tinto.
What the role entails
Reporting to the Senior Process Engineer, you will provide technical support and leadership to fixed plant Operations & Maintenance teams, assist in improving plant availability and performance to maximise plant throughput whilst minimising the associated costs.
- Ensuring plant capacity is fully optimised and production targets are met
- Providing technical support and advice to all operation crews and frontline leaders
- Identifying process improvement opportunities
- Fostering a culture of zero harm
- Compiling daily, weekly and monthly plant reports for the management team
What you will need for this role
To succeed in this role, you will have:
- A commitment to the safety of yourself and your team
- A degree or equivalent tertiary qualification in Metallurgy, Mineral Processing, Process Engineering or Chemical Engineering
- Understanding of unit operations of mineral processing equipment
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office suite
- A growth mindset & drive, to be open to new ideas to continuously improve and support our Plant, our Team & ourselves

Where you’ll be working
Located 110km west of Newman, West Angelas operates on a fly in fly out roster from Perth, Broome and Busselton.
West Angelas is a pioneer in autonomous technologies – we were the first site to trial autonomous haul trucks and incorporate autonomous drilling into our operations in 2008, and we continue to have one of the largest mining fleets in the Pilbara.
Our high grade, low phosphorous Marra Mamba orebody is an integral part of the Pilbara Blend, contributing both lump and fines products on around four trains each day. At the West Angelas hub there are state-of-the-art power generation and refueling facilities. These facilities supply power and diesel fuel to the East Pilbara mine sites.
The future is bright at West Angelas with ongoing growth projects at Deposits C and D, as well as additional deposits under study providing enormous opportunities for personal development and career growth.
